Some things have a market value, and if you are patient, you will get a buyer. Not the bargain hunters, but the person needing that thing now and not wanting to pay full pop.

I have had an ad up for years looking for a JD Gator charger, dead or alive. Had two contacts, one junk and one too good and new for my requirments. Now a third, says it's in excellent shape, he doesn't want to dicker, what will I offer? What a tough spot. I want to dicker! Or get it cheap, but I don't want to offend him and he disappears. But, I do want such a thing, just not really badly. I did ask for starters, where he was located, because that may just end the matter right there.

One thing is for sure. You always loose the advantage when you post a WANTED Ad.

I had a guy ask me to deliver a $300 item 250 miles one way. When I declined I he offered half of asking price to come get it. I had another guy get mad when I said I’d meet him right now for full asking price vs tomorrow a more convenient time for his 2/3 of asking price offer. I had a guy come look at a mower and than decline because it smokes. Well no crap, it said that in the add and I’m asking $250 not the $750 it would be worth otherwise. And of course the low ballers. I’ve thought about agreeing to meet them and never showing up but I’ve never done that.

Yeah. People shopping for "cheap" used equipment and then point out everything that isn't newish. That's so typical. I just politely say, well, maybe you SHOULD be looking to buy new. If I remember, maybe next time, after they pick it apart and make a low offer, I will just say, I would rather not sell it to them, because it seems they want a new one and I don't want them to be unhappy. That would be funny, to see how they respond.

I've used CL occasionally to sell off stuff, but never looking to make a killing. I research similar items first to see what an average selling price is (not asking price but selling price) if possible. Then I clean up my items, take many pictures especially of the worse areas (breaks, worn parts, cracks) and post the item for sale with everything revealed. After a very detailed description and many pictures, I add "First person here with $xxx.00 takes it." I only communicate through CL link at first and then by phone if needed for legit buyers. I've had excellent luck, with everything selling immediately and usually gone the first day. No headaches, no scams, and happy buyers.

A color-blind friend (can't see red) collects Coke stuff and took his dog to see a cooler listed for $150. The seller was playing with the dog when an obviously well-to-do guy showed up in his shiny new truck. He commented on the scratches and the stickers pasted all over the outside, trying to convince my pal that the cooler wasn't worth the asking price.

The fellow was agitated and anxious, and obviously wanted to push my guy aside and patch up the cooler, perhaps to just flip it 'picker-style'. The seller listened stone-faced to the second in line's comments, after which he said to my friend. "He's right. It is pretty rough. You were here first. What do you think?"

"Will you take a hundred?" says my guy. "Sounds fair enough. Let's get you loaded." Mr Hustle left quietly, his face seemingly as red as his truck. We're still laughing about how the seller dealt with him. It takes all kinds, and some folks really show some class when they buy or sell.

Whtat do you do when you don't want to show your interest to buy, but need to be pulling a trailer to pick it up and live far away?

My Grandpa would never take a trailer. Even on 100 or more mile trips. Same story for auctions. He would also go pay a deposit and come back and get it. It seems like a waste of time and fuel to me. I always take a trailer.

I will be out that way as I have a delivery to make. So I can look at it on my way back.
I rarely travel without a trailer on the back anyway so just make an excuse

Just make sure you don't move your eyeballs up and to the left, which would give you away.

If you're going to look at it, obviously you are interested. Bringing a trailer doesn't mean that you HAVE to buy it.
