8 hours on my tractor. Half of those were operating the back hoe. Yesterday it would not go forward while in gear, reverse worked. After a few back and forth shifts forward starting working again. Today it did it once then fixed itself. I was moving a small pile of dirt going forward and backward then forward stopped working again. Tried L M and H. Reverse works but no forward. The engine will rev while in forward but no movement.

The selling shop says they will come pick it up in a day or two.
This really blows.

Sometimes, on a HST selector, the position doesn't 'quite' go into the actual selected position (I hope that that made sense).

I've found with my HST 4105 that, when your situation occurs, I'll hold the selector towards the desired 'L' or 'H' and apply a bit of acceleration and it will pop into the actual position. You'll be able to feel the selector engage.

Is this a shuttle shift or HST tranny? If shuttle it could be something to do with the clutch pack engagement command. No clue if HST though.

It makes perfect sense. But reverse works so the trans is in gear. L, M, or H, reverse works. No forward speed works. Transmission oil is good.

It is a HST tranny.

It is possible they forgot to refill hydraulic system after installing backhoe, it takes a fair amount of fluid to fill all those cylinders on the hoe, if they forgot to refill tractor back up it could be all that is wrong.

IF HST have you tried looking at the linkage between the pedal and tranny? My simple mind thinks that if goes backwards it should go forwards.

Trans fluid level is fine. Anywhere else to check? And it worked fine for first seven hours.
Not sure I understand the linkage. Two pedals, left is forward right is reverse. Both are connected to the same linkage rod. Push reverse pedal and tractor goes backward. Push forward pedal and engine revs up. Linkage rod moves the same direction regardless of which pedal is pushed

On every HST tractor I have been around the linkage connected to the tranny moves one direction for forward and the opposite direction for reverse.

When you state pressing on forward the engine speed increases is the HST linked to the throttle on your machine?

I will admit I am not familiar with Kioti but I would be surprised if they are much different than Deere, Kubota, Branson, etc.

Yes, the engine speeds up. It is a linked pedal system. The further you depress either pedal the more your ground speed increases.

In my opinion, ( I don't have the manual) the swash plate will not be directly connected to the pedals in that size of tractor. So you don't have a direct mechanical connection to the swash plate. It will be controlled by a hydraulic circuit. This on some tractors is electrically controlled sensing the position of the pedal and controlling the swash plate hydraulically. I am talking out of my hat as I don't have the manual for this rig, but this is what I think. Of course if the swash plate doesn't move in the opposite direction the slippers will not develop any pressure into the block ports and the pump wont pump fluid towards the hydraulic motor in that direction. The swash plate must change angle from neutral each direction. Of course the range selector is just a manual "crash box" transmission, and since it moves in reverse that is not the problem. The swash plate is not changing angle, for some reason, that is the problem.

I'd be looking at the linkage and anything else between the pedal/treadle and the transmission (whether mechanical, hydraulic, electronic). Could be something very simple. Some sophisticated tractors (Deere eHydro, Kubota HST+) have a fly-by-wire setup so you're actually moving potentiometers with the HST pedal/treadle. A loose wire could disable one direction on a system like that.

I'd suggest looking at parts diagrams for your tractor brand/model and then see if there are any simple things to check. Could be something simple between the pedal/treadle and the transmission and those are easy to fix usually. If you trace it all to the transmission and don't find a problem, then it may be internal and you'll want to leave that part to the dealer/warranty process.

^^ If it isn't fluid level or something internal, it might even be a stick/twig or some other obstruction in that linkage.

Shop came by to pick it up. Driver tried forward, no dice. Next he started backing up and reverse quit but forward started to work. Then he checked reverse and it was working as well. It's in their hands now. At least the driver can pass along what happened when he picked it up.

At least the driver was able to verify it was messed up. Just wished it would of made it to the dealer with a visible defect so they knew how to troubleshoot it.

Stopped by the dealers today. Mechanic told me a solenoid went out inside the transmission. Seems Kioti doesn't want people getting inside the trans and messing around changing parts so they shipped a new transmission. They were working on replacing it when I stopped by and told me it should be ready in a couple of days.

That’s what the naysayers said about automatic transmissions and air conditioning in cars back in 1950.

Manual transmissions or shuttle shifts are obsolete technologies in small tractors.

Even medium and heavy trucks are rapidly transitioning to automatics.

That's not my point Mr Finn.

As most tractor owners are cheap ********* like myself, when the electronics or even a simple device such as a solenoid craps out and the trans case has to be split for the repair and the part is NO LONGER AVAILABLE, who is going to want this piece of crap when the gear drive version still works just fine.

New vehicles have obsolescence designed in. For example Ford Motor Company doesn't keep key codes or electronic files for those key codes longer than 10 years. Don't think tractor manufacturers are any different.
