The wood lot

... I managed to find 50 of them at $20 ea. I thought 50 was about right to have 3 years supply in the barn every year...

Mind us asking where you found the empty totes? Thx.

I have been putting up my own firewood in the IBC totes, just the cages with no plastic liner. I have been using them for 3 years now. I fill the tote loose, not stacked. I then stack them 2 high in the barn. I am amazed at how fast the wood dries. I usually cut it in spring and it will be at ~16% moisture content by that fall just stacked in the barn. We mostly burn Doug Fir out here. I managed to find 50 of them at $20 ea. I thought 50 was about right to have 3 years supply in the barn every year. We burn just over 3 full cords/year.

Thats a great price on the IBC totes. I would like to have 15-20 of them myself, but people want $50-100 apiece for used ones, still sludged up with chemicals around here. Oy!

We bought 20 from a guy selling them on Craigslist. My wife saw a bunch of them stacked alongside a business and stopped and asked if they would sell any. We got 30 from them. We did buy I think 10 more that have the liners still in them. We paid a bit more with the liners. We cut the tops off and use them for moving. I filled them to the top with stuff in my shop then loaded them on the trailer. I've been told fuel oil companies are a good source but they will have the plastic liners still in them. Craigslist is always my go to.
Good Luck!

I assume you did not haul them on top of your FJ Cruiser? :D.

Big trailer? Multiple trips?

Lol. That paints a picture. Funny, I've never owned the actual FJ Cruiser. My "FJ Cruiser" is an old FJ40 Land cruiser.

I have a 20' car hauler trailer. The totes are designed to stack on top of each other so I stacked them 4 in a row all the way to the back. They aren't very heavy... Quite a sizable load though.

What year is your FJ40? I've got a '71 that's gonna be my retirement project. Had it in storage since '86. It currently has a Chevy 230 straight 6 in it with a bolt-in V8 kit adapter. I've got the steel body tub, two steel firewalls, two different style steel front doors, a couple windshields, 2 different style back doors, a complete fiberglass body, full metal and fiberglass hood and fender sets, running boards, canvas half-cab.... all kinds of stuff waiting for me in a few years.

My FJ40 is a '76. We are pretty fortunate out here that rust is not too much of an issue. Not like the midwest. I'm pretty much rust free original metal. I restored it ~20 years ago. It is in need of a little TLC again. I have a little surface rust starting in a few areas.

Back in the late 80's I took the frame and body in and had it acid dipped. The frame came out real nice and I coated it right away with whatever was the good stuff back then. The body came back with a lot of paper-thin areas and lots O' little pin holes. That was treated with some anti-corrosion stuff and there it sits since. I'm gonna build up a 292 for torque for it. The 230 that's in it is too radical with all top-end HP and no low end torque. I had it in a Nova for quite a few years. The Nova rotted out, the LC engine died, I saw a V8 kit, and that was that.

Anyhow, like I mentioned, I'll get to it when I retire in 8-9 years.

I managed to snag a dozen of the totes myself yesterday. Finally found a seller willing to just part with the cages, and not force me to somehow deal with a bunch of chemical stained liners. $25 apiece near Fowerville, MI. PM me if anyone in Michigan needs more info.

The sad part is going to be when I try to pick up a full one of wet split wood, and my loader just says... no thanks. haha.
