Rolled my L4740 on to its right side last night
Shut it off within 10 seconds
Not knowing better, I tried to start it once upright
Half a turn of the engine resulted in a slamming sound with no ability to turn it over further with starter
Pulled glow plugs this morning and turned over engine by hand
Lots of oil in cylinders 2 and 4
Tonight I plan to reassemble everything and get tractor back into barn
Assuming it runs ok and does not smoke, is it safe to assume I have not bent anything?
If it does smoke or run rough, what is the easiest way to confirm a bent rod?

Curious what makes one incident different from another. I put my Steiner on it's side, with the Kubota 3 pinger-dinger diesel. Probably shut it off a little sooner than 10 seconds. It was upset for maybe half an hour. Tops. I let it sit for a couple of hours, shut off the fuel and turned it over. No apparent issues.

It's a good question
After spending a fair amount of time on the internet last night it seems that some people get lucky and have no residual damage
Most rollover stories, particularly those in which the engine hydrolocks, do end up causing some type of engine damage

How does oil get into the cylinders?

A compression test may or may not indicate a bent rod. How did the cylinders test before the flip? Is the oil affecting the test? If you now have a engine noise or vibration, you may have a bent rod. With the head off, measuring from the deck surface to the piston at TDC may show a difference. Measuring between the 2 bores on each rod will show for sure.

Thanks Ruffdog
I will test compression as that is pretty easy to do
Engine has less than 200 hours so I assume would have been within spec
Yes, I know I can pull the head and take a direct measurement
I was wondering if there was an easier way to tell

I couldn't imagine oil getting past the rings on a diesel. That thing wouldn't make compression worth a darn!

I know the old oil bath cleaners would get oil in your intake.

hello
my 1st response to a rollover... would be to step back, & be grateful you are still alive & uninjured. glad to hear this thread is not in the safety forum

as to the mechanics, you came to the right place for info & will let others advise. maybe contemplate how the accident happened for future success. walking away unscathed from an accident is a precious gift easily taken for granted... best regards
