is there much danger in using rental tools such as a grain drill that is used by lots of farmers and different brands of tractors. lots of brand name hyd oils and all the generic hyd oils that get all mixed together when using the hydraulic cylinders? all my tractors are the same brand so i use the same hyd oil in them and dont have to worry about cross contamination with my tools. i know my tractors are good but some tractors might have pump problems some water in them dont change the filters until they stop up etc. thanks for your opinions.

Personally I've never hooked to something that wasn't mine, but iffin I did, I would for sure flush it first with some good but cheap fluid, then with my standard change fluid.

X2 on flush it.

The distance I would have to drive to rent an implement is prohibitive. Besides I've checked. None of the rental businesses in the "big city" have rental tractor implements.

However - were I to become involved with some type of unknown implement - flush, baby, flush.

Most "rental" implements are from dealers or extension services and decently maintained.
A normal 3 1/2" x 8" cylinder only holds about 0.334 gallons of hydraulic fluid.
So compared with a hydraulic capacity of 10 gallons or a lot more (75 to 200 gallons) it's not much.
Plus I have never heard of or seen any damage from small amounts of JD Hygard mixing with IH Hytran
or other comparable fluids.

How do you flush an implement?

Disconnect hyd cylinder from implement, remove male hyd coupler tips from each hose, aim open hoses in a container, move cylinder rod completely in/out a couple of times, reattach male fittings, attach male fittings to tractor scv cycle cylinder in/out reattach cylinder to implement. Cylinder now has your tractors hyd oil in it

Well again, if it were me, I would rather not have some unknown qt or 2 or stuff added to my carefully maintained, expensive fluid, HST system. For the cost of a couple of connectors, to adapt to the pumping method of your choice, drain/vacuum/pump, that unknown away.

Like "Tx Jim" method above, there are several pretty easy ways to quickly minimize the risk.

seems like a pretty good way of doing it. just that little film of oil left on the walls wouldnt amount to much mixed with the rest of the hyd oil. be a lot better than plugging it in and just start using the piece of machinery and getting all the oil mixed with mine. thanks to all with suggestions and comments..
