When a gear tractor reaches 1000's of hours it needs a clutch; what does a HST need?

Just wondering what the potential repairs will be on a hydro tractor as it ages?

Basically the wear issues one would associate with hydraulic pumps and motors.

If you meant 1000 hours, it probably needs an oil and filter change as Eric said.

If you meant thousands of hours, it will probably need a rebuilt kit for the pump and motor, which includes all the wear parts (piston, swash plates, thrust washers, etc) and seals. This may or may not be hard to find if not impossible but will definitely get expensive.

HST transmissions are usually made by big hydraulic/transmission manufacturers, so, who knows if they will keep making repair kits for older transmissions? And when the transmission gets to the point of needing a rebuild, does it worth repair for more than the tractor worth or just trade the tractor?

But if proper maintained, it should last for a long time. Pretty much as a clutch, if the operator knows how to use it, you can get over 5000 hours of it.

I was thinking if you put 1000 hrs on it WITHOUT changing the fluid and filter, it may already be too late!

My JD Power Reverser trans needs fluid and filter every 400-500 hrs. If you let it go very far past that, it'll let you know. Trans light will start to blink sometimes when you do a forward to reverse. And the hydraulics will slow down a bit. Fresh oil and filter, and it's good to go again.

My 32 year old Ford is a basic geared transmission. IF I ever get a new tractor (highly unlikely), I was curious as to the possible repair bills with a HST.

It will be very interesting to see whether all the various hyrostats out there are created somewhat equally, given some time and hours. Or whether some turn out to be clearly superior or inferior.

My 1920 is only two years newer than yours.
Great machine....I will NEVER sell it!

IF kept up properly with oils and filters changed probably go forever and when it fails it fails, hours may mean very little... On my tractor, it says oils and filters at 50 hours (first time) and ever 250 hour after..... Only time (hours) will tell.....
