Hi everyone,

My G174 recently started to make a lot of noise when high gear is selected. After letting out the clutch in any of the high range gears I get a horrible noise. However the tractor does drive with no issue. Any thoughts on this?
Also the transmission fluid is up where it is supposed to be.

That will be quite hard to diagnose without taking the top off the gear case and having a look. Best case is that the high/low lever isn't engaging properly in HIGH and so the gears aren't meshing. Worst case is that the HIGH gear itself is worn or lost some teeth. I wouldn't use high gear until you have worked it out.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I have only used it in low, except to try a few scenarios in high. My father in law was thinking that it may not be fully engaging also, do you know if there is any adjustments that can be done?

I don't recall a way to adjust it, but have a look at the lever itself, there could be a set screw holding it on, I'd have to go look at mine to check but I can't right now.

Failing that, the transmission is easy to see with lid off, but quite a lot to remove before you can see it.

Does it make any noise in reverse and low range?
Does it make any noise in reverse and high range?

Does it make any noise with the tractor in high range and gear shift in neutral
and the clutch pedal out with your foot off of the pedal.

Does it make any noise with the tractor in low range and gear shift in neutral
and the clutch pedal out with your foot off of the pedal.

Does it make any noise with the tractor in high range and gear shift in neutral
the PTO in 1st and the clutch pedal out with your foot off of the pedal.

Last question, What does the noise sound like?

Hi fxrs55,

No it does not do it in reverse in low.

It does not make the noise in low or high when the gear shift is in neutral and the clutch pedal out with my foot off the pedal.

I have not tried it in high range and gear shift in neutral
the PTO in 1st and the clutch pedal out with your foot off of the pedal. I will try this tomorrow and let you know.

It sounds like metal on metal rubbing not really a grinding.

Also I was moving the lever back and forth today and it seemed like something is kind of hung up inside.... the lever is hard to move from low to high and is not very smooth.

When removing the cover is there a gasket that will need to be replaced?

Out of all the pictures I have I do not have one of
the under side of of the shifter cover. The shift
forks for high/low and 1st thru 3rd are mounted
under there. They are on shafts that the forks slide on.
Check to be sure the 1st thru 3rd shafts have not moved.
pictures below.

Try putting tractor in high range and while driving
push down on the lever like you were going to
put it in low range but don't push that far.
just to see if the high/low gear is rubbing something.
push down a little at a time. also put the high/low
lever between gears and let the clutch out and
listen for noise.

Also, there is a gasket but try to remove while
using a putty knife to loosen gasket. But RTV works.

Today I tried the tractor in high range and in 2wd and found that the noise was actual intermittent. While I was doing this my father was standing near by and he thought the noise was coming from the front of the tractor. I did try moving the lever from high to low while moving but I could not get it to budge in that situation.
