Bolens Iseki G174 Aux High noise

Today I tried the tractor in high range and in 2wd and found that the noise was actual intermittent. While I was doing this my father was standing near by and he thought the noise was coming from the front of the tractor. I did try moving the lever from high to low while moving but I could not get it to budge in that situation.

I didn't want you to actually force it to shift just wanted to
put some pressure on lever to see if shift fork or high/low
gear was rubbing against something in high range. pressing
down a little would move that gear a little and if it was rubbing
I though that little movement would stop the rubbing if it
was in fact rubbing. Its hard to trouble shoot from New Jersey.
you might want to jack up the front and spin the wheels and listen
for a noise.

Out of all the pictures I have I do not have one of
the under side of of the shifter cover. The shift
forks for high/low and 1st thru 3rd are mounted
under there. They are on shafts that the forks slide on.
Check to be sure the 1st thru 3rd shafts have not moved.
pictures below.

Try putting tractor in high range and while driving
push down on the lever like you were going to
put it in low range but don't push that far.
just to see if the high/low gear is rubbing something.
push down a little at a time. also put the high/low
lever between gears and let the clutch out and
listen for noise.

Also, there is a gasket but try to remove while
using a putty knife to loosen gasket. But RTV works.

I checked the rods and they are pretty much flush. Thank you for the information and the photos! I will pick up some RTV and take the cover off and let you know what I find.

Before you go to the trouble of pulling the cover I
would jack up the front end until the front wheels are
off the ground. with the tractor in two wheel drive
hold one tire from spinning and turn the other.
doing this will cause the drive shaft to the front
axle to spin but tractor has to be in 2wd. Doing this
will tell you if the drive shaft is rubbing inside the tube.
there is a seal at the upper end of tube that the drive
shaft goes thru. maybe its rubbing?

I definitely understand that I was to just move the lever a little. With the little bit of pressure I did apply I could tell that it was not going to move while the tractor was moving so I did not force any more then that. Believe me this thing has given me a bit of stress, especially since I only bought it a month ago. The tractor looks a little rough but is in good shape and runs really well. I think it got neglected for a few years and I have a little bit of work to get it to where I would like it to be. Along with getting this noise figured out, it needs a new seat, new tires, and hydraulic hoses for the FEL and maybe some paint eventually.

I agree that it is hard to diagnose from a distance, and just wanted to pick your brain about it since you have lot more knowledge about the tractor, and I am very appreciative of your help! I am going to be taking it to a mechanic in a few weeks to get it figured out, but I am trying to narrow it down now so that he wont have to trouble shoot as much.

Good idea on waiting to take the cover off. I will lift the front end, with the tractor in 2wd and spin one tire while the other is blocked to see if I get a noise and will let you know if I hear anything.

Do you think the previous owner left the tractor out side in the rain
or snow without a cover over it. Check the rubber boot on the
main shifter just to be sure water didn't get in.
Also does it make any noise if you have the transmission in neutral
tractor running with the clutch out and the rear PTO in any
gear and PTO shaft rotating?

Unfortunately the previous owner did leave it outside uncovered and the rubber boot is torn a little. No noise when the transmission is in neutral with the clutch out and the rear pto in gear and shaft rotating.

With the engine off, I lifted the front end tonight and blocked off the left wheel and rotated the right wheel with the tractor in 2wd and the transmission in neutral. I did hear a slight clicking and rubbing noise coming from the drive shaft. I took a video and I will try to upload it.

Here is a link to the video I made tonight. G174 drive shaft noise - YouTube Not the best video to watch but it did capture some noise that may or may not be normal. Actually sounds more like a rubbing then a clicking and you can see the drive shaft moving up and down but that could be due to me rotating the tire and causing the tire to move up and down. Also disregard the really loud noise... that is the tire scuffing the ground just about every time I spun it. Let me know what you think.

I can't really see the drive shaft but what I think was the drive shaft looks bent.
Drive shaft should spin without any up or down movement.

I am going to make a better video of it tomorrow.
