The first thing this past Sat I got ready to cut the cord if the time comes, I now have a tool to do it, anytime any where so no more trying to work with frayed cable, nasty stuff. Almost did break the cable this weekend when the trees come up against a stump, so when the tractor started to slide back I took that as a hint. Just because I can dont mean I want to, but and when the time comes I'll try that blue cable ending thing I bought last year in the 3rd picture, top left under the cab, might have to zoom in to see it, hoping that will work better then cable clamps.

I put one of those "blue things" on the end of my new cable when I replaced the cable on my winch. It works great.
If anyone else is looking for a good cable end, I highly recommend it. The cable is held in place by wrapping it up one side of the wedge, and down the other. The harder you pull, the tighter the wedge grabs. The wedge is hard to see in this photo, because it almost matches the background. When I installed this on my 10mm cable, the tip of the wedge did not stick out at all. It took me a couple of tries to get it so the cable end did not poke out either (I didn't want the strands sticking out where they would snag me). Once it was set under load, the cable has not budged since I put it on several years ago.

Hud-Son Forest Equipment sells two sizes of this. The one with the swivel handles 8-10mm (5/16" to 3/8") cable: T3 Swivel End Fitter. They used to sell one that would fit larger cables (it did not have the swivel), but I can't find it on their web site. I'm betting they still have it. Their site is not the easiest to find parts on. Worth a call to them if you are interested.
