Oil in Starter Motor

Model- YM2620D. Tractor fails to start. Cleaned all electrical connections. Battery checks out ok. Tried a new other battery. Same results. Pulled starter. Found starter filled with oil. Ykes!!! I thought that this area was to be oil free. Do I have a leak from the motor main drive shaft or a leak from the hydraulic sump area? I had the same issue about 19 years ago. Also, is there a drain in the bell housing area? I looked at my parts book and it not show any drain.Would a seal additive to the motor oil and Hydraulic fluid stop the leaking for cause problems? I Will be taking starter to rebuild shop. Thanks for your input on this matter. Dick

I think I have heard of this happening one other time. Your starter is pretty high in the clutch housing, however, if enough oil gathered in the bottom I am sure the flywheel might sling it around everywhere. I do not have a manual for the 2620 but do know that many models do come with a drain hole. Some seem to have plugs and some do not. Have you looked carefully for a hole? I suspicion you should find one.

If oil is present in the housing then yes, either the engine or transmission is leaking into it. Should be able to tell by color of the oil.

I have a tiny plug in mine I can pull. It's a pipe plug.

The color had me guessing wrong on mine. I have the plug in the Bell Housing also. Which I removed because of oil showing up in the housing. I mentioned this just a while back about my axle seal had a few drips when I would park it after use. Same thing happened on the Eng. oil. If I would check it and fill to the last Hatch Mark just inserting the Stick threads deep It would leak and show up in the Bell Housing. After just filling the Eng. oil next to the last one it quit. Put the plug back and it still doesn't show up. Learned the hard way twice.
If oil or Hyd. fluid gets all the way to the Elec. motor that would be a major leak and my bet is you have a real problem. I would be almost sure there is a Drain. My reasoning is Rice Patty and water needing to drain it. A good clue would be which oil you may have a use of if either. But IMO. your using one of the two.
