Ford's Profit on an Expedition

BFJ, thanks for the trip down memory lane! Some great old trucks. My last full size truck (prior to stepping into the "modern" era of aluminum F150's..) was an '88 F150, reg. cab long bed XL. It was indeed a simple beast, always got the job done. Then went through the gauntlet of mid-sizers...Rangers, S10's, Ridgelines...now back into a full size again, and couldn't be happier. Do miss those vent wings, tho. :)

I had the same experience with the mid-size S-10. Gas mileage was 25 percent worse than my full size Silverado. And yes, I always loved the vent wings. I wonder why they discontinued those.

I notice less and less people run around with their windows down any more. Too hard to hear your smart phone I suppose....

I still prefer fresh air to AC, unless the humidity level is high, then that AC feels pretty good!

I remember those old wing vents getting sloppy and causing noisy air leaks, so we folded matchbook covers to put under the latch to tighten up the seal. The early latches were nice to catch with a coat hanger when you locked your keys in the truck too. Then later they added a release button that had to be depressed before you cold spin the lever open.

Yeaaa, I always hated those wind whistling things! I remember having to silicone one of them shut to stop it's noise.

All you guys complaining about 50, 60 and 70K pu's, you do realize that, that's a "choice" don't you?. It's sure not what you HAVE to pay to get a new pu..

A very nice pu can easily be bought for 35K or so, and I'm not talking about a 2wd nothing pu either...

Not questioning your integrity at all. Just curious how you arrive at such negative opinions about a subject that is generally very well regarded by consumers, piers, and professionals.

Proclaiming the 2.7L EB "is a turd", and that the GM/Ford 10AT "leaves a lot to be desired" would tend to have one believe you've had a bad experience with both. My experience has been extremely positive, so it's a bit perplexing to me what led you down that negative road. That's all. Trying to understand how you formed those opinions. If I didn't want to hear your opinions, I wouldn't be asking!

So far, we've determined that, because the 3.5EB is more powerful, and your friend wanted the most powerful engine, that alone apparently makes the 2.7EB a "turd" as you say. Interesting conclusion, but sure, if it works for you.

Then you proclaim the GM/Ford 10AT "leaves a lot to be desired", but no explanation as to what it is you desire more of. Perhaps you could sum this up, then we can move on.

I just hate unfinished thoughts.

Okay, out of the hospital, blood clots, infections, I'd like to forget this past week that's for sure..

Back to unfinished thoughts..

So my cousin and I are very close and have had a bunch of new trucks, he was in the market for a new one a few months ago, he ALWAYS buys Toyota, so we head off to the yota dealer to drive a new Tundra, coming out a an 5.7 Tundra I figured I would never get him to the Ford dealer. The new Tundra was a very nice truck but the fuel consumption is the turn off. So we head to the Ford dealer.

We look at two trucks, a 2.7 and a 3.5, they let us take them out for a ride, (I'm a Ford guy and have been for 30 years) and I know from riding in his Tundra I think he is going to like the interior of the Ford and he does.

So first I tell him lets take the 3.5 for a ride and we do, he liked it, I wasn't impressed with the way the transmission acted being use to a Torqueshift it seems to act weird and not as smooth as I like, my cousin felt the same because the Tundra is very smooth. We then drive the 2.7, after driving the 3.5 the 2.7 had noticeably less power on the torque end of the rpm range which makes sense.

While we drove the 2.7 the service department unloaded a new transmission strategy on the 3.5 and let us drive it again, it was better but still not what I'm use to driving in Ford trucks. My cousin decided he was happy with 3.5 and bought it. He hasn't been completely satisfied with it really, he likes it but it has a few problems (front end noise while turning, hubs staying locked etc and they can't seem to fix it), things he is not use to dealing with because his yota's gave him 0 problems and he is the type of guy you don't want driving your truck, he is hard on them.

Hand calculated MPG is 23, if I drove the truck I would probably get 28, he just drives them hard.

I'm glad you're happy with the 2.7, the above is just my opinion, don't get to excited due to someone else's opinion concerning a product you may own, having the option to buy what YOU like is what's important.

This is really no different than the orange and green debates, same ole same ole..

Isn't the Expedition the model folks are smelling exhaust in?? Like 3,000 complaints, and are now being investigated for those complaints. A couple of the cases, people passed out and crashed...

Even the Expedition police vehicles, that were making cops sick, Ford said that was caused because the police added equipment that let exhaust in...

But, Ford says it's not happening, there's no exhaust leaks.

I just think the Ford of today, isn't the Ford of old...

As a side note, my buddy just bought a NEW F150 a month ago, and it already left him stranded along the road, over heated when it lost all the coolant.

"overheated when it lost all the coolant"

Pretty certain that sort of issue is not brand specific.

Can you buy a new pickup for 35K, yes, will it compare in equipment to a new truck you paid 35K for in 2007 NO. You get a lot less for the 35K these days than you did a few years back.

The trucks I bought were Lariat's, top of the line because that's what liked, now the same truck would be a platinum edition, go check the price tags on one of those..

As for your (left him stranded) post due to loss of coolant, I'm pretty sure that happens to like, every brand vehicle on the planet at some point..

Well, it went into limp mode, and he added coolant and it wouldn't come back out of limp mode...

The service manager told him they have been having a LOT of the same leaks on F150's, due to the plastic spout the hose goes over... Now, THAT would be brand specific!

Interesting article suggesting that Ford can make $20,000 on each Expedition sale.

I read the article, but it didn't give much accounting detail. Is that Net Profit (I sincerely doubt it!) or Gross Profit (which is before overhead, including development)?
