3 Bottom rollover plow (IH140 plow) questions

Ha, I looked really hard at the first pics and couldnt see the plastic sheeting. That natural light coming in is great. It would take a lot of lights to bring in that amount of light.

I never did put lights in the barn although it was in the plans to do so.

FYI, this barn was at my last house. Sure wish I had it here.

What a great plow. I've never seen such a small roll over plow. About the smallest roll over around here - 14 bottom - being pulled by a 500 hp CaseIH or the like.

I forget partyhound,

The land you are plowing, are you going to hay it? Or just use it for pasture/grazing land?

Too funny. I’m the opposite. Around here all we had on the farm were 2, 3, and 4 bottom rollovers. All small averages around here and we wouldn’t have the room to turn around a 14 bottom on land rollover. Lol!

oosik is in an area where they use big Ag equipment. I've seen multiple dirt working pieces hooked together and pulled with D-9 and D-10 cats covering 80'-100' in a single pass.

That's good to hear. Reminds me at some point I need to get my rears loaded.
It is very important to get your rears loaded or add max cast iron weights if you want to continue with that plow setup. You are putting terrible stress on the front driveline components, they are doing all the work, especially if you keep the loader mounted and eventually you'll tear something up.

I plow about 20 acres annual with 3x16 and it was bad without rear weight, and this is with a 7,000 lb plus 75hp tractor and 16.9x30 rears. I plow with the loader off and about 600# front weights.

I also have a smaller JD 45 HP 2WD and it is useless for most tillage without loaded rears.

I always like to test the FWA tractor first in 2wd with an implement to see if it can at least move it a few feet, albeit with slipping, before engaging the fwa.

Well, Lynn, for right now I just hope to get some sainfoin established. I will see how it does as this is not irrigated. For now, it will just be grazing. I am going to put in the effort to get the field leveled (smoothed) in the event it does well enough down the road to actually hay it. I have ground water at about 2-10 feet depending on where on the slope you are standing. My hope is that the long taproot of the sainfoin will reach down to the moisture and do well. It will take several years for the taproot to develop enough to reach ground water, so I will be praying for rain!

?? downslope

To be clear "partyhound" is the one with the plow and his rears are loaded. I'm just reading/posting like you.:)

My experience is if the roots hit ground water alfalfa does not do well. Not sure about sainfoin.

My last home I planted 4-way. (oats, wheat, barley, peas) This was non irrigated and it did very good. But, I had to seed every year.

Downslope, are you suggesting that leaving the loader on will cause more stress on drivetrain components wheras adding iron weight to the front will not? I'm curious as to why that would be the case. Either way puts weight out front. The filled tires definitely add more traction and would help, but with this type of plow much of the weight from the plow itself can be transferred to the tractor via the 3pt hitch to aid in traction where needed.
