I know a few people who just can't quite seem to get the 'u' in amblance.

My experience is amber lamps on a tow truck, red ones on an ambulance.

We sound the 'H' in herbs, Orrie-garno oregano, Baz=ell basil.
Some others we hear are Chimley, Sumbarine,, Vietmanese, Arks for ask, Picture square-that one threw me for a while until I mentally dissected the spelling.
I think the vietnam reference is a voice structure abnomaly, the brain will take a shortcut like typing teh instead of 'the', or it could be plain laziness.

Years ago, I installed recording equipment in Provincial court houses. At one, the Government over-seer kept calling some of the (Chameleon) speakers I was installing, prounouncing the CH. I never corrected him, as he was a very dry, know it all sort, but had to laugh inside, whenever he made mention of them.

Am I wrong? Did I make an assumption about the "correct" pronounciation? I was going by the song (Culture Club???), which was in that same time period. Geez, did the guy not listen to pop radio?

It is a challenge (Kallenge?), anything ending in ough, I think I did this before but Rough Through Bough, come to think of it (not too hard, I just got up) but Chameleon is one of the few CH words where the CH is not sounded but Chef is sounded SH, Character is another, I'm sure there will be others.
