I think I have a defective reel, but want to run it by the brain trust here first. I bought a Flexzilla retractable reel. I can't get it to hold air. When I turn the regulator to send air to the reel, it just pumps & pumps, and never get above 20-30psi. At first I thought it was filling the hose, but after 10 minutes, it ain't filling the hose.

I checked all the connections, no problems (water tested with soap). When I put my hand over the opening in the reel, where the hose comes out, I can feel air coming out of it. Quite a bit, actually. Am I correct to assume there must be a bad connection inside the reel?

I got it from Amazon, no problems exchanging it. But I wanted to make sure there wasn't something obvious I'm missing before I return it.

Sounds like you got a bad one. If the compressor shuts off with just a hose but don't with a hose real there is a bad connection/ Sounds like a bad one if you can feel it. Extend the hose almost all the way out and see if you can pinpoint it closer.

Yes, without that reel attached, it shuts off when full.

I did fully extend it, just to see if I could find any obvious problems. Nothing I could see, but the air comes out even faster.

The air is coming out from somewhere inside the reel housing. I'll just swap it thru Amazon.

Bummer. That's a reason I don't like plastic enclosed reels. I prefer all the fittings be exposed. Might be a simple fix if so.

I (usually) love the convenience of a reel. Now... not so much. I can see why a std hose has its benefits.

I’m not a fan of reels either. Mine has an internal spring broken or unhooked for the latching mechanism on one of my reels.

Taking it apart appears to be quite a chore so I have taken the low tech approach.



An excellent alternative to a reel is the overhead Festoon Cable system. I may take photos of my homemade setup and post on my retirement farm shop thread later.

The disassembly process is less involved than you might be thinking... from your picture shut off the 1/4 turn valve at the top right of the picture, take off the hose coming straight out of the center of the reel, remove the bolt that that hose threaded into which is the banjo bolt for the main hose so it will be loose at this point. Now take out the 4 screws or bolts on that red cover with the yellow sticker which gives you access to the spring that has most likely just fallen off of the keeper like the one I got for half price... I bent the end of the spring to keep it in place naturally instead of wanting to twang out of place if the tension was removed.

Of course start all that by releasing the air in the hose...

That's often the difference between something that appears expensive and something that looks just the same and is a lot cheaper. Probably, same thing applies to tractors actually. Like they couldn't splurge on a good 7 cent "O" ring and went with the 2 cent ones!
