I have a stuck PTO cover/shaft. It was greased last time used but apparently pushed together too much. Outside cover was bent when purchased. It’s been always shed kept. I don’t believe the actual shaft is bent, just the metal cover.

I tried using RTV to pull it apart to no avail. I’ve sprayed tons of penetrating oil.

Suggestions? Chain it to a tree? I didn’t want to pull but so hard while attached to the manure spreader but you can see the tires were spinning.

Also if I decide to purchase a new one, does the HP rating on the shaft matter that much if I purchase a new one? Manure spreader a New Holland 327. I have a 65 pto hp and a 35 hp tractor that will pull it. (Probably mostly the 35hp tractor.) IMG_3339.JPG

Soak the shield pieces with a penetrant.

Try hammering on the yoke or the bell shaped cover of the shield WHILE the Kubota has it under tension.

AND/OR apply heat to the shield while under tension.

Worst case scenario CUT the shield off. ( perhaps just the OUTER cover). A grinder mounted cut off wheel would slit it nicely to get it apart. Good luck.

Thank you. I tried knocking it off while under tension with no luck. I’ll try the others!

You may not get it apart. Sound like the PTO was too long and the uneven terrain during use forced the pto shaft rearward jamming the shafts together. You need to disconnect the shaft from the spreader during your attempts to separate the two halves before more damage occurs.

If the shaft is too long be thankful the shaft was jammed and the tractor or spreader was not damaged.

I had one that was stuck on a Land Pride mower I bought used that had been sitting neglected outside. I ended up cutting the plastic shield off so I could access the slip joint. I stood it on end for a week or so in my shop and would daily give the shaft some Kroil. I think I also lightly tapped on it to help the oil penetration with vibration. After 4 or 5 days, the Kroil appeared at the bottom end. I then chained it between two trees and tensioned it with a chain fall. When the tension alone didn’t free it, I smacked it with a hammer while still under tension and it freed up. Still using it.

AWESOME! I’ve done the same several times. Minus the trees, though. No trees around here. GMTA!
