Non chlorinated brake cleaner seems to be less of a damage issue on plastics but are more flammable than chlorinated.

Brake Cleaner: Chlorinated Vs. Non-Chlorinated, Which Do You Choose?

Better test that for yourself. I have found the chloinated doesn't melt nitrile gloves while the non chloinated make them gooey. Have used the chlorinated for years and never seen it damage any orings or plastic.

That said I spray awesome orange from the dollar store on my disconnects, rinse with water, and let dry or blow dry with compressed air before disconnect.

I like that "awesome orange" idea.
Thanks!

I wore glasses for many years and they were my protection against sprays, etc. After I had cataract implants I had to make a conscious effort to remember to wear safety glasses. If you are in the same boat as me, remember to wear safety glasses and also to make sure they are impact rated. If they are they laser the info right into one of the lenses. It wouldn't take much to blind a person today.

Exactly the reason I don't wear contacts.

Another instance, years ago right after I started having to wear "spectacles" was an incident with a nail. Was putting up manufactured siding on my house requiring nails to hold it, and as you know it's a reasonably hard surface to penetrate with a nail. In this instance, I was starting a nail, thought I had it started, removed my fingers and gave it a whack, shot out from the siding and it hit my (plastic) lens right in front of my pupil. No doubt I would be one eyed today without them.

I had a piece of splatter from my plasma cutter hit my safety shield lens right where my eye would have been.

My take is the eyes get so accustomed to having the lens up front that the reflexes stop working.

When I tried contacts snow flakes hurt and I could not walk in the wild as the smallest twigs and leaves kept poking my eyes.
I returned to specs soon.
Also helped since I was also getting nearsighted and swapping reading glasses for sun glasses was a pain.
Note I have always worn the self adjusting lens type.

OK, I have had cataract surgery and am now 20/20 and actually don't need specs anymore were it not that I have one eye that focuses higher than the other and , example, watching TV I see 2 TV's superimposed. Sort of a vertical 'cross eye'.
Back to specs!
To note that for years no optician ever caught that deficiency*, took the Cosco guy to catch it.

*Also explains many other 'quirks' that I had learned to adjust to, to some extent.

Do you really want to use brake cleaner? It's meant to remove oils - not what you want to do around quick connects that contain ball bearings and rubber components which may get damaged by the solvents.

Always keep the dust covers on and use compressed air to clean off any dirt.

I'm the OP and what I decided is prudent is to to blow off the crud, wire brush and blow off again. Then I'll wipe things thoroughly, blow off again and go from there. No brake cleaner and no solvents. I figure if I'm careful, that will be good enough. You guys are right and the solvents aren't worth the risk. Thank you.
