If your buddy's wife can't enjoy herself in that environment, she needs to stay in town. For the life of me, I don't understand why anyone would live in a city.

She use to head up to the farm but that soon got old and she now stays at the Bay Area home...

He thought about looking to work at the VA Hospital in Roseburg... but decided for now to stay put as Chief of Anesthesia... with the prize being Oregon retirement... already use the Co-Op for supplies and finds his money goes much farther without a 10.25% sales tax... Farm Truck with Farm Tags... tractors, etc...

I told one of my daughters about the video at start of this thread, she watched it and commented about a successful program in Rhode island. I did not find any links (didn't look real hard), but will ask her about it if I remember to on Easter when they are here.

Those are some pretty good reasons.. There are people that belong in the city, hard labor, mowing grass, painting buildings, cutting firewood etc is not in there DNA and never will be..

They go to work, come home from work sleep and go to work again, that is what they call life, I call it no life but that's just me, someone has to live there and I'm glad it's not me..

The homes in the worst disrepair here are the small yard large square foot suburban places. I think the non- lawn mowing, non-firewood cutting bunch moves there and goes to work and goes home like you said.

And the ones that are kept up are often done by landscaping services.

By far the best single family homes in the old neighborhood were parklike and maintained by 80+ year olds mostly widows with just basic tools... and they really were show places on 5,000 square feet lots...

What happens is the home is sold and within a year everything is dead, overgrown, or simply taken out...

With the cost of water many new buyers, those paying 650K for entry just let the outside go...

Maintaining these yards is not an over the top task as they are fully landscaped...

One of the new neighbors is from Hong Kong... he told me he paid $600 to have dead vegetation removed and wants to concrete the entire lot...

Shifting Cultural Values is one way to look at it...

We figured the old widow spent an additional $60 a month for 7 months of "Summer" water to keep everything lush... her comment was half the cost of what the neighbors pay for cable...

Without leaving the home, working from home.. We have become a very unhealthy place.

Obesity has continued to grow within the United States. Two of every three American men are considered to be overweight or obese, but the rates for women are far higher. The United States contains one of the highest percentage of obese people in the world.

I won't disagree with the overall trend of obesisty, but I do question the exact number given the measure most often used to determine obesity (BMI) makes no distinction on whether that increased weight is due to increased muscle mass or higher levels of body fat. Personally I could see both contributing given the increased availability (and use) of weight training.
