Long ago some government agency decided to attempt coyote control. They used an explosive cyanide device - M44. It had good intentions but backfired. The device killed more farm animals/open range livestock than coyotes.

I have two barn cats. I provide food - they get water out of my lake. In exchange they have a very significant impact on the rodent population. I'm hoping soon they will move on to the pocket gophers.

HEY i'm sure somebody here wants to save the wonderful rodent population

The majority of feral cats come from other cats, both feral and un-neutered/spayed pets. It's just that simple.

you are correct. in fact i would have to say that all cat, feral and otherwise come from other cats.

The small Wisconsin town that my business is in has a feral cat problem. There are two major run down properties with buildings about to collapse that are cat havens. These properties are adjacent to mine and I see cats night and day roaming around. When we had an addition put on our building, some of these cats got into our basement and had to be live trapped out. One of the neighbor ladies feels sorry for these cats and feeds them. It is nothing to see 15 - 30 cats lounging around her place. We never see any birds or squirrels, just cats. The sandy ground and pine needles along with the horse shoe pits make for a fine litter box for these creatures to leave treats for us to find. If my dogs are out with me the cats will flee (or die). So far the dogs have gotten 3.

I'm not a cat hater, I actually own one that stays in the house. Left unchecked, feral cats are a real problem. The town is now addressing this problem and we'll have to see what happens next.

I see a whole lot bigger problems in Wisconsin than cats these days

your town should open up more Chinese restaurants then, the cat problem will be gone!.. they boil the cats alive because it releases a lot of tasty adrenaline!..

I'm with pine on this one...

I've spent my whole life out in the country or in the bush, and as a kid we had quite a few cats on the farm as we had milk cows and always gave them some milk...

IF a cat brought home a rabbit, pheasant ect., dad would shoot that cat, and YES I have seen cats bring home rabbits and one or two pheasant.

I don't know where the cats these days come from, but there's always cats coming here to replace the ones I shoot, so I keep shooting them as they make huge mess' in my barn! I have one neighbor with a cat and it has never came over here, at least I've never seen it here. I wouldn't shoot it if I did see it here, as they feed it and take care of it...

I know in the past, citiots have dropped cats and dogs out here as I've seen them do it, so I have to assume that's where they are still coming from.

SR

yeah, there have been a few declawed cats that have been anonymously abandoned around my parent's place on the rural outskirts of a moderately large city in MN. Guess some people think it's cheaper/more humane to abandon a pet than it is to drop it off at a shelter.....

I'd suspect the extent of the feral cat problem varies by region since I see very few feral cats around here, but I frequently hear coyotes ....and I'm fairly certain there are more than a few feral dogs running around as well given how common it is to see a guard donkey in the pasture with other livestock. Which would suggest it's probably safe to assume a lot of feral cats are being turned into snacks for other (larger) predators around here.

One cold January evening I was on my way to a friend's house, headed up a deserted gravel road when I saw something in the road up ahead. It turned out to be a very young kitten which seemed to be sitting right where somebody had opened their door and dropped it. My friends weren't cat lovers and nor were their dogs; so I stopped at a nearby farm, explained the situation and who my friends were and they agreed to take it in. I hunt, fish, and trap; raise my own poultry and pigs; yet strive to do it as humanely as possible. It would be poetic justice if whoever left that kitten do die had been dropped off on a deserted road in the middle of winter with no winter wear, food, or method to start a fire.

On December 20, 2018, the federal Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act was signed into law. I guess a $5000 fine goes along with being caught. I would rather not eat feral cats anyway. Certain Asian cultures are largely responsible for possible extinction of other species, this seldom gets talked about

how could the Chinese restaurants make a profit since then?. maybe that's why their prices went up so much!.. if they have to use real beef and pork, and they can't find enough cheap alternatives, it would be devastating to the traditional Chinese restaurants!..
