My little truck isn’t that bad. 20/30 cents a mile in fuel but deprecation has pretty much hit rock bottom. It’s probably still worth as much as when I got it 3 years ago. You could half your fuel bill ( probably not if you still have 6 wheels) but how much is the deprecation per mile on a newer truck? My little truck isn’t treated any different than a passenger truck. My heavier truck is technically not a CDL truck and there’s no log book required for it. I’m not 100% certain of the law but I don’t think commercial trucks with a CDL within 150 miles requires a log book. The big truck isn’t nearly as practical as the little one. I don’t care to drive around the ton but the 6500 better have work to do or it’s parked.

I only have a half ton now. Needed a truck and it was the right price. I miss my one ton but they got really expensive here.

GA, No diesel in mine; the 5.9L gas but it's not been real thirsty so far. Of course I only use it occasionally and don't have real long jogs to drive. I paid $6,000 and then put in a radiator and transmission cooler to help the transmission stay cooler but I've only got around $6500 in it. Plates and insurance are much cheaper than a regular dump truck would have been.
That's where the no regrets come into play. Plus, the joy of being able to run and get a load of whatever whenever I want and not have to manually unload is well worth the expense to me. It's not rusted or in bad physical shape so I'm happy so far. I sure can understand your regrets after having gotten rid of yours, but it is what it is. Keep an eye open and you'll find another if you really want to get it back. Greg

Awesome. To have less than $7000 invested on a good working truck like that is sure worth having. They are just so useful.

A dump trailer cost more than I have in my dump truck. And without the 1 ton dump I wouldn’t have anything to pull a dump trailer with so for me that’s the obvious choice. I use mine all the time. After realizing what I was missing I sold my 1/2 pickup and I don’t miss it. I’d definitely miss my dump truck.

With the mandatory inspections here the compromise was a dump trailer... so far it has more than paid for itself... only issue is needing more room when towing but a good solution to avoid inspection, tag, insurance and maintenance expense..

Ultra, Yes, I was torn between getting a dump trailer or truck. I thought long and hard about a trailer only. I found several that I was interested in. The emissions, tags, insurance, etc., do add up for the 1 ton but I would have needed to get a modern 3/4 ton truck to be able to tow the levels I wanted with a dump trailer anyhow and that would have meant much more initial investment. I was searching both angles and this one just popped up! I practically jumped when it came available and didn't waste much time dickering around. I wanted it and got it.

There were several other large frame dump trucks also in my price range but the tags alone were gonna be double the cost yearly. I figured "for my limited usage this will fill the bill", and turns out I was right. I've hauled 3 yards of recycled concrete at one load (heavy rain and driveway was flooded badly) and it was a full heavy load but got done! I won't haul quite that much at one time again, but now know that I can if need be. But your points are certainly valid out here in Ca., those items are always needed to be considered. If I'd already owned a large enough tow vehicle I would have just gone with a trailer.

I still need a regular trailer to move my junk around and am constantly searching for one of those too, but don't have any urgent need so can be quite picky and am taking my time. Would like to find a used 20 foot tilt bed, but they just don't seem to pop up outta nowhere and say "Buy me!!" At least I now have the tow ability to get almost any sized trailer I'll ever need. Thus, again my 1 ton purchase will pay off in another way. I have zero regrets. Greg

I have a 1/2 ton now. It's not the same animal as a 1 ton.

I deliver a fair about of firewood. Taking less than 1/2 cord is not very efficient unless I happen to be heading to town anyways.

Having to be careful throwing in the firewood so I don't break the back window or dent the fenders is time consuming and so is hand bombing the wood out of the truck.

Ultimately I would have a 1 ton dump. Money being an issue, I have a logging trailer that several years ago I modified to be road legal. I would come out of the woods with a cord. I would unhook the loaded trailer from my tractor then hook the loaded trailer to my truck. This way there was no hand bombing wood from my logging dump trailer to my truck. Then I would put more wood in the truck. The load would be 1.5 cords. I could do that when I had the 1 ton.

At this time, my logging trailer needs some work to be made road legal but under the circumstances with the money situation, I think putting my logging trailer back on the road might be a cost effective option. I won't be able to take as much as when I had a 1 ton but it will be better then taking many small loads then having to hand bomb the load out. My logging trailer has an electric winch on a crane which dumps a full load of firewood.

For minor wood farming I think 1 ton is the way to go . . .
