First day at the woodpile since the mud arrived and finally has dried out some.
Split a couple of bucket loads and will start stacking it for next winter.View attachment 603977

Your leaves are about a week ahead of ours up here. We are just starting to see some green on the poplar buds. If we had a few more days of sunshine like today, things would change a lot. It's still a little muddy in the woods but things are finally starting to dry out... until tomorrow's rain.

Must be something in the air because I thought today would be a good time to start splitting my wood too. First use for the tractor in a while also. Split about 1/2 a cord.



I thought FruitCakes leaves were ahead of our too. Our's are more like you diecribe. The popples just starting to show light green and the red maple buds swollen and dark red.

I was happy to have one dry day to work.
The popples are coming on strong as are the Soft and Hard maples.
Sure looks like spring, though we could use some warmer temps.

Funny story about those Beatles. I remember being terrified of them when I was a small kid. The way they would fly around, kinda drunkenly. You never new if they were going to crash into you. Anyway my dad managed to finally convince me they wouldn't hurt me despite having a most terrifying set of jaws. Many Years later, long after dad had died. I was out cutting firewood and one landed on my arm. As I was looking at it, it bit me. It bit me hard, holly crap that hurt. Anyway I glanced up at the sky and kind of had a talking to with my old man.

I don't think I would be brave enough to let one of those ugly critters sit on my bare arm. They are just to scary looking. I don't doubt that they could take a pretty good piece of meat off your hide if you let them.

Thanks, And I finished filling the second one today, need to build a couple more...

But first I need to mill up some more 12 foot 2x4s and put roofs on them also..

It seems unusual for a woodsplitter to have rails or whatever on the side of the I-beam, where does the debris go when trapped in there. I did something similar on mine, I cut out the middle and made holes for stuff to fall through, but doing that I had to reinforce the I-beam. I like being able to set a log on the beam without having it do a balancing act so wont roll off and land on my foot feet, I know very few have that problem.

That's the way Huskee's are built. There are a lot of them around. On mine most of the stuff finds a way out over the edge by itself but I do keep a hoof pick hanging right where I work because bark gets packed in the two corners and needs to be dug out every so often. Hoof pick works good for that.

The rails capture the wedge and yes, if you were to use the splitter in a horizontal position it keeps the log from rolling off. And I suppose if you used it in the horizontal position "stuff" might get in there but every time the wedge advances it would push it out. I on the other hand never use the splitter in the horizontal position, I always use it in the position in the picture, vertical, and other than sweeping the base off on occasion with my hand I get no debris in there at all. And that little hunk of log you marked in blue in front of the splitter is not ready to be split, its my stool for splitting.. ;-)

I use my Huskee/Speeco 28 ton both ways. Horizontal is fine for smaller stuff, but vertical is better than lifting heavier stuff. Some debris gets in the channel, but most of it falls out easily. Seems to gather more when wet. Any type of pick works, even a screwdriver. I need to get or rig up some wings though to catch split pieces when using it horizontal. Even a small piece falling that distance can hurt if it lands on a toe. Don't ask me how I know.
