That's the way Huskee's are built. There are a lot of them around. On mine most of the stuff finds a way out over the edge by itself but I do keep a hoof pick hanging right where I work because bark gets packed in the two corners and needs to be dug out every so often. Hoof pick works good for that.

Well I had to go out and look, mine is not a Husky But it looks identical to yours other than that tray. Mine says SpeeCo on it but I'm sure they are made at the same place SpeeCo makes Husky or vice versa.. Or maybe they changed names over the years, I'm guessing mine is close to 20 years old.

I use my Huskee/Speeco 28 ton both ways. Horizontal is fine for smaller stuff, but vertical is better than lifting heavier stuff. Some debris gets in the channel, but most of it falls out easily. Seems to gather more when wet. Any type of pick works, even a screwdriver. I need to get or rig up some wings though to catch split pieces when using it horizontal. Even a small piece falling that distance can hurt if it lands on a toe. Don't ask me how I know.

I don't think I have ever used mine in the horizontal position, like you say I don't want to pick up a log to put it on there. The only time I ever fold it down is to move it and that doesn't happen too often either. And I thought it interesting you called it Husky/SpeeCo as Gordons says Husky and mine says Speeco.

SpeeCo is the manufacturer. Huskee was the brand for TSC at the time. The Owner's Manual has both names. I'm not sure who is making the new CountyLine models, maybe still SpeeCo.

Yeah, I got mine at an Atwoods store in Sand Springs Oklahoma years ago, hence the no "Husky" name..

One thing I want to do with mine is rig up a stabilizer support to KEEP it upright when I want it there. With as much as it weighs, I definitely don't want it falling. So far I've been able to chock the wheels or dig a small hole for the ram base to set in, but it's still risky when raising or lowering. Smaller diameter hydraulic shaft would be ideal. T-d off the main hose somehow maybe.

I've never had any problems with mine falling/tipping/whatever while its in the vertical position, I stand it up and it just stands there...

I bought mine used in 2013. The first thing I did was add that table so when I split a piece the table would catch one half and the other half would be in my hand resting on the beam.

The top is plywood with some sheet metal glued on to it. I can remove it with two bolts that go thru two ears welded onto the beam.

I use it in the vertical mode to break down big blocks into pieces that are easy to handle in the horizontal mode.

I like the horizontal mode because it is fast and easy. Set the full bucket at table height and then stand in one spot to split it and rough stack it with a little toss never having to move or bend over.

It seems unusual for a woodsplitter to have rails or whatever on the side of the I-beam, where does the debris go when trapped in there.

I like being able to set a log on the beam without having it do a balancing act so wont roll off and land on my foot feet, I know very few have that problem.

I used that concept when I built my splitter, but, I cut the flange away mostly,, leaving only 3/4",, so there is less area to trap material,,

The way I do it is to have a pile of bucked up logs to one side of the splitter, then I split them and stack the splits in the loader, then I move them over to the drying racks. This way I can keep the splitter in a shady area to split then move the splits to the racks that I keep in a sunnier and breezier area to season..
So I never use the splitter horizontally, don't need a shelf.. but to each their own.. what ever works best for you... or me.
