Frugality

Sometimes, frugalness will make people spend MORE because that is cheaper in the long run. A person that bought a high quality garden tractor in the 80's might be more frugal than a person that kept buying cheap mowers all these years. The first person still has his quality mower while the other person has a back yard full of non-running cheap mowers. Just 2 different ideas of frugalness.

I use good old wood chisels for cleaning off weld splatter. I wouldn't be able to use a chisel for it's intended purpose if my life depended on it, so why not. I have (old German Tradesmen) friends that would skin me alive if they saw what I done!

The quality piece is probably worth half its original value now 40 years later. The cheap ones are worth nothing. Well maybe scrap but the effort to get them there would eat that.

Something needs to be melted down to make all the new SCUT casting!

I can't begin to count the times I've been looking for something to accomplish a task and suddenly remember some hunk of junk I got (too many ) years ago that's been sitting it a corner gathering dust and rust that just happened to be exactly what I needed for the project at hand.

Not me. i spend the best of my days energy looking and if I find it at all, It's usually, in the end, unsuitable.

My Lady friend is always amazed and says that I seem to be able to pull stuff out of my azz.

I think frugal people are the ones that don't base their happiness on quantity of stuff or fads. They set in their mind what they want and what they need, work hard to obtain it, and are happy when they get it. Lots of people get caught up in the chase and forget why they got into the race for in the first place. I agree with the people earlier in the thread that said frugal people decide on what they want and save for it until they can pay cash.
I believe I'm frugal but maybe I'm cheap?
I've hammered nails out of old boards to use again, and straightened them when necessary. I built a large duck house out of old restaurant table tops I was able to get for less than a buck each. Our original greenhouse was built out of the debris from our home renovations. The extension to the greenhouse was built out of wood our church was going to take to the dump.
My wife and I have always chosen to live below our means so that we could save money for things that mattered to us; nice vacations every four or five years, college for the kids, helping our community.
Sometimes we buy new. Sometimes we buy used. Sometimes we buy used to figure out what we like and don't like then buy new.

Interesting thread. I hadn't considered the difference between cheap and frugal. Guess I am mostly frugal, tho I have bought several new vehicles (for cash). Retired about 20 years ago and my savings have grown since then. If I had to refurnish my house, I would hit the thrift stores--the older furniture is frequently better quality and significantly less expensive than new.

When I started the thread, I did forget to mention that I'm 3rg generation hoarder as well. I am blessed to live so close to Dad that if I ever need any widget, I can usually find it within 3 filled barns.

A common occurrence is for Dad to admire with excitement some object that I have in my shop. I'll have to remind him that it actually belongs to him, and that it came from "the barn":laughing:

 He has forgotten about some of his "treasures". . .
