The bush hog slams hard on start up, worried about breaking the pto gears. does have a shear pin but can I put something in between the pto and bush hog to prevent this. Tillers use a spring coupler, would this work?

What RPM are you at when engaging the PTO? You want it pretty low...idle RPM and if the tractor starts to stall, give a little fuel. If your tractor has a foot pedal for fuel, use that.
Now, since 'hog blades pivot, you will hear some racket as they extend....no getting around that.

Same advice previously stated . Have the engine rpms just high enough to avoid stalling when the pto is engaged . What kind of tractor and what kind of pto engagement?

They'll slam hard because the heavy blades swing out on startup. Start at as low a speed as possible and not stall the tractor. My present 2025R starts the hog at 1300 rpm. The 4010 (like a 2019E if they made them today) requires up around 2,000 rpm. Think its hard starting at higher rpm is one thing that contributed to the exploded Ujoint off the engine at 660 hours and 9 years.

I always hold the clutch in, engage PTO lever, and slowly let the clutch out. But I have seen people just throw the lever on some tractors.

Depends on the type PTO.
Most independent PTO's turn on with a switch. They are either on or off, clutch peddle has no effect.
I turn mine on at idle.

Like others have said lowest idle possible for engagement with electric PTO. I have also had grass, weeds, etc get wound around the blades where they pivot on the stump jumper plate. This made the blades turn hard and the engagement was very abrupt.

I have noticed my brush hog starts rough, I keep the RPMs low and within just a couple of seconds, smooths out and I bring the mower up to speed. (New tractor owner.) The first time it concerned me, my dad (long time small farmer) stated it was normal and it was due to the way a rotary mower works as the blades swing into position.

"Start at as low a speed as possible and not stall the tractor."

+ 1. We had issues engaging our brush hog with our MX5800--violent shaking, engine stalls, etc. Our PTO is engaged electronically, by turning on a switch. We learned that one factor was that our tractor tended to stall or sputter at idle rpms, which are about 800 rpms. Just nudging the rpms up to 1,000 made a significant difference. Where possible we also lower the mower to the ground to eliminate the mower shaking when engaged. And we replaced our too-short PTO shaft with a longer version (courtesy of Everything Attachments, from which we bought the mower). No problems now.

Another hat in the ring....normal as the swinging blades move from where they were when stopped to fully extended.....start it slow and advance the throttle slowly....what I do.
