BBQ Smokers

No, the toilets were inside the house. The outhouse (outside) was for when the pump quit or power went out (often). But mom and the girls changed the rules when they figured out they could make us boys haul water from the creek to the back of the toilet. I think there was not going to be dinner if we held out or something drastic like that.

When I was in high school, our house did not have running water, so we had no other choice than the outhouse. Taking a bath in a wash tub in the Winter was not fun. We had to pump water from the pump outside and heat it on Mom's kerosene kitchen stove. If you ever lost priming water, it meant a trip to the creek. The next house we moved to had running water, but no bathroom. Dad built a septic tank an added on a bathroom, just off us boy's bedroom. It was a hoot...everyone had to traipse through out bedroom to go to the bathroom.

Not sure how a BBQ smoker thread got onto outhouses. :laughing::confused3:

Anyhow, I have never owned a smoker and because of being in a new house I don't have a grill of any kind. I left my natural gas grill at the house I sold.

My question to the posters here is this; I have to buy something because I can't stand to eat a steak or hamburger that has been fried on the stove, should I buy a gas barbeque or a smoker? Is smoked food that much better?

Almost bought a pellet smoker at costco, but they were out of stock when i went to get it. I use my weber gas grill a good bit. I also just got a blackstone griddle to take camping.

Alrighty,here's my answer. In return,you tell me which to buy,Chevy or Ford?
I like charcoal/wood better than gas cooked. I have a collection of both I've built over the years but increasing often,I sear steak in cast iron skillet then finish in oven. Yes,cast iron work's best for searing. The taste isn't as good as wood but better than gas and just as quick. So if you want tasty,go with wood/charcoal. If you want quick,you already know what gas taste's like,try stovetop sear followed by oven finish then make the call.

Thanks for the reply;

Your first question was a no brainer, put a Cummins in a Chevy and never look back. :laughing: I have a Dodge.

I can't sear anything inside the house. I have a vaulted ceiling in the kitchen/great room and the smoke detector is at the high point. If we burn toast that stupid thing goes off.:banghead: The only reason I don't disconnect it is if by some chance my house caught fire and burned down, I don't want the insurance to somehow find out and not pay to rebuild the house.

Most people I ask say smoker hands down. I guess I'll give it a try and see how I like it. At the end of the day I prefer grilled meat over anything else.

There's some new fangled things they call "range hoods"that will take care of those annoying smoke detectors.:D Were it not for my range hood,I couldn't fry bacon or make toast.

Range hoods that vent outside are a game changer. I can’t believe how few houses have them.

I use my Weber grill, with charcoal and Mesquite, Oak and Pecan smoking wood for steaks, burgers and anything grilled including chicken, and I use my Big Green Egg with charcoal and smoking wood for ribs, brisket, chicken, and anything else smoked...including my ABTs I did today.

My ultimate grilling goal is to do one or the other or both when large groups are here:
1. Sous Vide the steak to doneness and sear it on the gas grill
2. Smoke it in a pellet stove.
