Need stronger brakes, what can I do?

Yeah, you have to tighten assembled otherwise how would you know. Loosening is a *****.

Having them properly adjusted will help the situation.

If you see oil leaks, all the above doesn't matter...

It doesn't seem that hard to loosen the brakes to me. You just click the wheel in the other direction. It is a pain though because you most often have to get underneath the trailer to do it.

I checked for proper setting of the shoes by lifting the wheels off the ground and spinning. I heard a very slight drag when I checked all 4 brakes.

Thanks,

Due to the oily seepage film on the outside of the bearing cap I opted to replace all 4 brake assemblies. They should be here next week.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Wise choice.

In regards to adjusting.. Proper method is tighten until you can't. That centers the shoes within the drum. Then loosen until light drag.

Post pics of the install and the results.

Has anyone gone with the disk brakes and the electric hydraulic controls?
If so how do you like them?

Just read through this whole thread and you are the only one that brought up electric over hydraulic disc brakes.
While I have not used them, it is the first thing I will have done. Convert the drum brakes to disc with electric over hydraulic set up. Others have done so and they say the difference is night and day. Stronger brakes, less fade, better heat dissipation, less complicated parts, and easier to inspect.

OP, look into getting disc brakes and an electric over hydraulic set up. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Disk brakes are great! About a $2000 DYI project.

I壇 be more inclined to use that $2000 to trade up for a new trailer.

Agreed! Especially if it is an occasional use trailer - pretty expensive upgrade.
