Ok, I will change my chart above. I had mis-remembered my engine rpm gauge, thought it went to 2100. It goes to about 2400 to 2600 at full throttle I think, depending on load.

Like always, there is a slight trade-off with different gears.
Using the first PTO gear will give you more torque, which is needed for things like hard pack tilling, post auger, etc.
Using the second PTO gear will give you better fuel economy and a cooler tractor (important on hot days), which works well for things like soft tilling, grass cutting, etc.
Suppose one could use the 3rd and 4th PTO gears at 540, but it would have to be pretty low resistance. Maybe a small generator head or waterpump? Lots of those are rated for 1000 rpm PTO speeds as well. I recall a comment somewhere that normally 1000 rpm PTO are non-moving implements and may or may not actually be attached to the 3 point.
D1600 Estimates assuming a 2580* rpm top speed
PTO 1 = Gear reduction of 4.778
PTO 2 = Gear reduction of 3.431
PTO 3 = Gear reduction of 2.588
PTO 4 = Gear reduction of 2.012
So to get 540 rpm, here are my rough numbers:
PTO 1 = 2100 engine rpm
PTO 2 = 1853 engine rpm
PTO 3 = 1397 engine rpm
PTO 4 = 1087 engine rpm
This may come in handy for tilling and the like. This old tractor doesn't creep well like newer ones do, so decreasing rpm makes sense to slow down engine speed to lower forward speed for some jobs. I can barely idle at 1087 rpm, it sounds horrible below about 1200 with all the clanging. I sometimes drive a newer tractor with a digital speed gauge. I till with it at 0.25 mph, and I don't think this Mitsubishi goes that slow.
*As a side note, my tractor seems to show a thick line closer to 2400 to 2500 on its tachometer. So it's possible that these numbers are too high by about 5 percent. I'll need to even see if I can get her up to 2580... I don't think it goes that high, but I haven't run it in a few weeks.
