Good Lord. There are actually states where laws regulate bats!!!! I would expect such nonsense in CA - - but other states also........

I guess we just aren't quite as civilized here - in the PNW.

"Legal Status

Many Washington bats are currently being studied and may be recommended for protection under the Endangered Species Act. For current legal status and other information, contact your local wildlife office.

All species of bats are classified as protected wildlife and cannot be hunted, trapped, or killed (WAC 220-200-100). The Department of Fish and Wildlife makes exceptions for bats found in or immediately adjacent to a dwelling or other occupied building. In such cases, these animals may legally be removed and no permit is necessary (WAC 220-200-100).

My daughter once called me in a frenzy as she had a duck in her fireplace!
I caught it with my fish net, washed it (was a covered in soot) and
let it fly away.
I recall that it was a wood duck.
Wood ducks are one species that nest in trees so I suspect it was wanting to set up a nest.

It's hardly nonsense. It's estimated that loss of bats could cost American agriculture $3.7B (that's billion) in losses due to insect pests that they consume each year.

I remember when I was a little kid I was out in our yard playing. Two little ducks flew overhead and landed on a horizontal branch of a big oak tree. One of them walked over to the trunk and went into a hole. I was thinking ducks shouldn't be in trees. I went and told my mom there were ducks in the tree. She said I must be mistaken, as ducks don't land in trees. I had to argue with her and drag her out into the yard. SEE! She called a friend, who happened to be the local Audubon chapter president. He said yep. Wood ducks. They weren't common around here at the time, and soon, we had a dozen people with binoculars and cameras in our yard. Someone brought a movie projector over and they showed us a movie of the little baby ducks jumping out of the trees and bouncing on the ground, then running off after momma duck.

That was one of my favorite childhood memories. ;)

Hopefully they also said, 'Kids, don't do this. You won't bounce, but you will be hollerin' for Momma.'

No, that part didn't take. Fell out of quite a few trees in my youth. :laughing:

One of our favorite things to do was shinny up small trees as far up as we could until they couldn't support our weight anymore. Hang on to the top and swing down to the ground as the tree bent over. Let go when you got near the ground and the tree would whip back up. We kept trying taller and taller trees. My buddy's older brother was up about 30' and did it, but instead of the tree bending over, it snapped off. He landed on his back on a stack of sawn firewood. He was still holding the tree top when he was laying there. Couldn't move. Had to call the ambulance for that one. But he recovered, as most of us did. :rolleyes:

Hang something reflective near the entrance,, bats, like anything else, do not like to be looked at,,

Birds were taking my corn seed when it popped up,, I hung these near the field,, and never lost another kernel of corn,,
I am sure the bats will hate them also,,,

At least 10+ years ago they started noticing large bat deaths in caves in New York. It was quickly spreading west and identified with the name White Nose Syndrome. Over half the states in the US are now infected with WNS. If you visit a show cave they will ask you questions about where your clothing and possessions have been. now you know why. I "retired" from cave exploration a few years before WNS surfaced so am not very up to date on it.
