Bats won't buzz people that often. Are you sure they are bats and not chimney swifts?

I certainly agree with you Moss . . . We have lived at our place for many, many years . . . I'm retired now, but before that I used to get up at 3:30 am every morning for work (had a bit of a drive) the bats were out everywhere never was I ever touched by one.

Hello More good ideas. My chimney is sealed from bottom. It was part of a foundry, back in the day. Never had top sealed. So, I can't start a fire in it.
Neighbor walks by in evening and the bats buzz him circling. Sometime his wife is with him. I don't know if she knows they are bats.
As we know the shots can be trying. It was 15 years ago my grandkids and daughter & son-in-law . Shots weren't real bad then. Probably same as today. IT can be dangerous business.

Cheers.....Coffeeman

The post-exposure rabies shots weren't bad at all. First, however, they give you an immunoglobulin shot. That one is based on body weight. Me, being 210#, got 4 of them. One in each thigh and one in each butt cheek. It's a thick medicine and isn't real comfortable going in. And it leaves a tender area like a deep bruise, for a couple days. The rabies shot itself is very similar in feeling to a flu shot. Just a quick poke in the arm at day 0, 3, 7, 14 and in our case day 21. Some places do a 4 shot series and some do a 5 shot series.

One of our kids wants to be a veterinarian. And that's the same one that works with the bats. They require pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. Since the kid had them just the previous year, they did a titer test to get the levels of antibodies still left in the kid's system. Level was still high, so no booster was required at that time. They encourage people that work with wild animals, veterinarians, etc... to get pre-exposure vaccine and to get titer test every so often. If they need a booster, they still get a series of the shots, but the immunoglobulin shot isn't needed.

As to the cost, I do not know why it's so expensive for humans compared to pets.

Also, if you get bit by an animal with unknown rabies vaccination status, even if you had pre-rabies vaccine, they still recommend you get more shots.

The bats probably werent buzzing the people but the skeeters that were following them.
My son and I had to do the rabies shots.
Security light is over dog area and our dog had collected a pile of dead rabid bats.
My son, little at the time, thought they were birds.

I read a story a few years ago about a group of little boys that found a dead bat on a playground and dared each other to kiss it.

They all had to get shots.

No, that part didn't take. Fell out of quite a few trees in my youth.

One of our favorite things to do was shinny up small trees as far up as we could until they couldn't support our weight anymore. Hang on to the top and swing down to the ground as the tree bent over. Let go when you got near the ground and the tree would whip back up. We kept trying taller and taller trees. My buddy's older brother was up about 30' and did it, but instead of the tree bending over, it snapped off. He landed on his back on a stack of sawn firewood. He was still holding the tree top when he was laying there. Couldn't move. Had to call the ambulance for that one. But he recovered, as most of us did.
My father taught us to do that, shinnying up a little ash tree in front of our camp. Of course everybody else had to try it, and that tree's days were numbered. By the end of summer it was permanently laid over on it's side, and we burned it in the fireplace.

There's no danger of me going up a tree now, though. :p

Sad to say the ash trees are few and far between now. An ash outside my bedroom window was the first tree I ever climbed. It was only about 4" around. By the time I was 12-13 years old I climbed it a good 40' up. By the time my dad passed away in the mid 90's I climbed it one more time at age 34 up as high as I dared. Probably a good 50-60 feet. We sold the house. My guess is the tree has succumbed to the emerald ash borer by now.

The lady vet I take my dogs to is a hottie. I wonder if I should ask her if she gets rabies shots. If she says yes, I could say that then I will not worry if she bites me.
:rotfl: :rotfl:

Well, maybe I better not ... I do not need to to be looking for a new vet.

As to the cost, I do not know why it's so expensive for humans compared to pets.

Doctors routinely face big lawsuits and pay very high insurance premiums, vets don't.
Same goes for the pharmas.

The house I grew up in had bats in the 3rd floor walls. We counted over 100 bats coming out of the house one night. Even with swampy area out back never had real mosquito problem. Never swooped at people, just keep the bugs controlled. Occasional bat in the house, catch with net or blanket and let outside.

When my folks sold the house buyer wanted the bats gone. My dad said no problem. Closing was the fall after the bats migrated for the winter.
