I had meant to abandon my XP computer when I got a new one. It came with nothing in the way of software, and nothing can be bought, only rented. None of my hardware is compatible with it. So I run two computers.

I have a few electric pencil sharpeners. I would have manual ones if I ever found one in a thrift store. But I always feel somehow a little anxious, when the pencil shortens. It's only fun, using a nice long, new pencil.

How do you correct a thread title? A pink rubber won't do the trick.

I just roll pencils against a belt sander. It’s way faster and does a better job than a pencil sharpener.

Paper tape calculator. I'm disappointed that my book keeper doesn't use one and had no interest in mine. She uses the spreadsheets.

I find an odd satisfaction sharpening a pencil with a pocket knife. Then again, there's nothing wrong with using the tool at hand.

Real wooden pencils, note pads for actually writing notes / lists. Smart phone is just for phone calls. Hand saws, coping saws, chisels...about 8-10 different style / sizes of hammers. The 'old school' list can go on and on.... Technology is great, but I / wifey don't depend on it. We still write checks and actually mail them!

We have a cheque account and on the proviso that we don't write any cheques we are not charged any fees, it is a good but confusing option.

My compass. We use GPS for most of our work now, and more and more are going to "PDF Maps", a "smart phone" program which allows us to create photomaps so that we can tell exactly where we are in the woods at all times. Yet I have never had the batteries go dead in my compass, thunderstorms and sunspots don't effect it and nobody has ever scrambled the North Pole the way that they did the satellites when a-hole terrorists attacked in 2001. In 40+ years my compass has only failed me once... showing that the sun was rising in the west.
Apparently I had accidently gotten it near a magnet and it reversed polarity.

When timber cruising everything is taken on an electronic data recorder; I carry a pocket sized spiral bound Write-in-the-rain notebook in case the former fails. Actually I carry that notebook everywhere, and it also has comments about wood, terrain, and anything else that I want to remember.

I carry a Zippo lighter in the wintertime. I've never been good at working a butane lighter under ideal conditions and if my hands are wet and cold I want to know that I can start a fire. Matches are a backup... I want two opportunities to start a fire if it ever becomes necessary.
