Yanmar YM240 Yanmar YM186D
The little YM186D has the brake shaft going through the brake cover, then welded to the external lever. Can't disassemble this like I did on the YM240 where the lever is removable, to allow pulling the shaft out from the inner side of the cover.

Any advice?

Can you send a picture, so that I can see what your talking about? I probably can off no advice I would just like to picture what your talking about.

Can you send a picture ...
Hmm I should have looked at the Hoye diagram before asking. It appears that the shaft on these is removed by pulling a clip on the inside then sliding the shaft toward outside - with its lever still attached. In contrast to YM240 where you detach the outer lever then slide the shaft inward.

This should be simple. Pulling up the brake pedal recently with my toe has been a nuisance.

Thanks for asking the right question. I should have thought to look there first.

ha. Thanks. I have to do the brakes on the truck this weekend. I just so happen to see your posting and the exploded parts view.

I'm in the middle of the brake project now, came in for lunch. It's not going as well as I hoped. The snap ring (#2 above) is so rusted in place that it will never come off intact. Somebody's been in there before (new springs on the shoes) and it looks like they broke the ears off the snap ring without breaking it free from the slot its rusted into. Or maybe the tips of the snap ring rusted down to lumps and they stopped when they saw that.

I applied penetrating oil and worked the lever free, then put in a little sewing machine oil and worked it some more, then cleaned up with brake cleaner to get out any oil I could work out of the shaft/sleeve joint. The shaft turns easily now. I wonder how long this will remain serviceable. I should order the snap ring, for next time.

Chances are one of the snap rings in a HF assortment will fit that, drive it off with a chisel and give a proper clean. It might work ok now but that oily slurry will set up again and you'll be right back where you are now.

Part number one looks pretty used up. I would order it too along with the snap ring.

It's back together.

I see now #2 in the diagram is the o-ring at the outboard end of the shaft and the rusted snap ring is #3. Both are available at Hoyetractor (where I usually buy parts). The shaft and lever assembly (#1) shows Not Available there.

I've never ordered from Yanmar Corp and don't know if this 35 year old model is still supported. Its a made-for-USA model, so it should be.

If the shaft and lever assembly isn't available OEM then I will have to to clean up the existing one and maybe eventually weld material on the little cams that spread the shoes. It cams the shoes properly now.

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions.
