Buying Advice Sick and tired of low quality riding lawnmowers

on the basic question of how much do you need to spend to get something "decent":

When I bought my X2 CC several years ago, my goal was to find the least expensive good quality riding mower that I could, since I was loaning it out to an elderly friend. But it also had to be built well, with a good engine. I found a leftover X2 CC with a 23hp Kawasaki engine and a very heavy duty fabbed deck for 2500 bucks. Dealer said it was last of Kawasaki's, CC was going to different engine. Well, nice premium engine, nice premium deck, only 2500 bucks, such a deal.

Well....drive it up on my trailer and when I hit a certain spot it almost feels like the frame is flexing. Plus super heavy steering without PS.
Something has to give to get it at that price point.
And which TuffTorque trans is in there, the bare minimum or the next model up? Pull a heavy cart up a hill with the first one and welcome to your local service center.
I think the CC I bought was high value for the money. Unlikely I would buy another.
Moral of the story, I found decent quality for 2500 bucks. Your results will surely vary.

Have always believed in trickle down tech and quality. That's why JD and Kubota and even Simplicity are safe choices.
Not sure about Toro, have no experience with that company but a lot of mowing experience there.
The world of zero turns is another matter. Lots more choices, almost bewildering number of choices.
I used to own a full suspension Ferris before my right arm gave out. Marvelous machine, gazillion zerks to grease.
So many of these name brands are made by the same company, personally I think Ferris was bought out to get their suspension tech.

It seems like Simplicity, Husqvarna & Cub Cadet no longer have a Kawasaki option, it's all Kohler and Briggs & Stratton. I've had my fill of those engines, no thanks... I guess the best bang for buck was a 2018 Husqvarna 354XD with Tuff Torq K66 and Kawasaki engine, could be had for ~$3700, but now in 2019 that model is a Kohler 7000 series (which I am furious with for this bending starter BS) and a Hydro-Gear transaxle, which they don't give the model number...

Are JD lawn tractors the only Kawasaki option left? JD has always been overpriced, hate to go that route.

A friend of mine just bought a 348XD with the Kawasaki engine from Jonal's down here in Greenfield township, NEPA about 2 months or so ago. I believe it has the Tuff Torq K66 as well, but can't be sure.

Is that a 2018 model? On the Husqvarna website and no Kawasaki for 2019.

The intake valve on the RH side of the engine was at .006", the rest were at .004". I don't think that's a problem... I adjusted the intake valve back to .004"

The tractor has 860 hours on it.

That's always the debate I have with myself when I look at valve clearance. If one is over .001" tight I will generally loosen it, but what to do with one that is only a few thou. on the loose side? It isn't going to cause any problem.... but on the other hand sometimes it might make just a little bit of noise.
Just as an aside, with low revving cool-running diesels I don't see valve settings moving much so much as I did with high revving hotrod gassers. And even on hot rods if I start adjusting too small a clearance it tends to just return to where it was... and then does the adjusting itself becomes wear on the threads?
I don't adjust my tractors nearly as often as I did on hot rods. There it was part of regular monthly maintenance. On the tractors decades go by.....

BTW, good on you for being involved and interested in your dad's lawnmower. Of course it doesn't make any real difference....but it sounds like it does to him.
I remember my own dad at about the same age being all concerned about whether it was worth while to invest in a new car. He didn't have much money, but he finally decided to do it; his reasoning was that after a lifetime with cars and mechanical things he just wanted to see what the new ones were all about. Pure curiosity. The bottom line being that the money mattered less to him than his curiousity and wanting to stay involved.
That made perfect sense to me, and we got to work on the project together.

Thanks, I'll start tomorrow by calling the closest dealer and seeing what they can do. I think the Husqvarna with Kawasaki and K66 is what I'd want.
