Clear as mud!

Personally, I have a passport and will keep it renewed. As long as I have that with me I shouldn't have to worry about ID for airports and such.

I am totally perplexed by those who think that a passport will not work for flying ANYWHERE,.....in the US or out!

Make sure you've got ALL the required documentation when you go to update to Real ID.

Several years ago, out state came out with a veteran's DL, so I decided that since mine would needed to be renewed soon, I just get the new one.

I walked into the Court Clerks office, handed them my retired military ID, old DL and told them I wanted the veterans DL. The Court Clerk and I have know each other for over 50 years, I personally knew every other person that worked in the office either through school, associations or through my work with them in the Sheriff's Office, but everyone said I had to have a copy of my DD 214 before they could issue the new DL. Literally everyone in that office knew I had retired from the Army

So, the next trip past my house, I stopped and grabbed my file copy DD 214, drove back to the Sheriff's Office and made a copy of that, assuming that they would need to file it, but they simply looked at it, handed it back and proceeded to issue my license.

I think there is a whole lot of truth here and some confusion. I was TOTALLY mistaken - a valid United States passport WILL allow air travel in the USA AND after October, 2020. So will military ID and various types of other government ID( specific types not listed ).

I had to research three web sites to verify this. Two of the sites would have you believe that after October, 2020 only the REAL ID or EDL or EID would be accepted.

I apologize if I, also, added to this confusion.

However - I do see a lot of confusion coming down the pipeline. With two OFFICIAL SITES indicating the enhanced ID's only - a lot of folks, me included, might research no further.

This confusion is amplified by the use of multiple terminology. REAL ID - EDL - EID

The overriding concern being - if you travel within the USA, be very sure that whatever documents you have will be valid after October, 2020.

Thank God - Its been over fifty years since I've traveled by plane and I have no plans for future air travel.

For long distances, air travel is safer, quicker, and quite cost effective,....... even when compared to a nice new power wagon.

Yet nowhere near as much fun as the PW.

fried1765. I agree - quicker, cost effective - perhaps even safer. But not NEAR as much fun. I enjoy the drive as much as "being there".

I plan on a trip this late summer/early fall to the UP of MI. Houghton, MI - 3250 miles round trip. It's going to be an interesting trip to visit a great person. It's the Taco Wagon all the way.

Depending on the destination outside of US territories...a passport will suffice for personal identification BUT...there may be several other documents required to board some international flights...

As someone who used to drive to Canada for no reason other than getting a tank of cheap gasoline or a bottle of aspirin, I find the whole issue a load of poppycock.

I had some business at our local Federal Building last week. I went through the ID check and metal detectors and then asked the Marshall's about my ID (not real ID) and if it would work after 10/1/20. They shrugged their shoulders and said they didn't know yet. According to them, the Federal Judges who have offices in the building can decide on the level of security and they can decide if Real ID is needed in that building or not.

They already have a big sign at the entrance that says "No Cameras Or Recording Devices Allowed In The Building", but they decided long ago to not enforce that due to the prevalence of camera phones.

This building houses offices for the IRS, Social Security and the Federal Courts. So, all sorts of people that probably won't be getting a "Real ID" will still need access to it. It also houses offices for the FBI, Customs, etc.
