I had a tough time finding someone at first, but one of the local contacts I had who does excavation work on the side came through. After watching him on a Bobcat S220 Track Loader I realized that a compact tractor was not the first choice for removing heavy clay earth for a barn pad. In any case, we had the driveway extended back about 100 ft, and the pad built for a 30x48 pole barn with a 24' front porch. The starting surface was close to level, so it was dug out 6''. He packed it in 2'' lifts first with the skid loader, and then with a compactor. We left the driveway with the base material only for now until the equipment for the barn and cement truck are finished tearing it up at which point we will put some #73's with fines to finish it off. Barn should go up in the next 4-6 weeks.

Will do - as it turns out, the builder which is locally known for being a good pole barn builder has 16 barns ahead of ours. They can't complete any of them because apparently nobody has a pad or leveled site yet. That moved us up to the front. It should start in the next 2 weeks hopefully.

One of the best indications of a Contractor being a good one is his waiting list. 16 sounds like a lot of other people also like this guy!!!

As Eddie says....a good contractor wants to keep his people working ! You don't want materials laying on the ground getting wet or the sun drying them out and getting warped. Just be ready when the contractor says I will be over in a week to start your barn ! Morton built our barn....they even supplied a porta a potty. I supplied the electric and water. Where we live there is no cell service, so I supplied a land line phone for them to use. Came in handy when they had to order the concrete or other materials.

And how fortunate to build on flat ground. Makes the pad a lot cheaper. Lookin forward to the build.

Short Update - they started the barn late last week. They work fast. It is about done! See pics below: This is in about 1.5 days.
