Piney gets a little ouchy sometimes, I think most of us have learned to not take him too seriously!

You really should think higher than that of yourself!

My parents took our family on a vacation to California as my HS Graduation present.

We passed through Reno. My Mom talked my Dad into spending $10 in a Casino. So in they went (my sister and I were too young to go in, so we waited in the car.) Within about 5min they walked back out. Both with a glazed look on their faces.

They were quiet when they got in the car, and I expected they had lost it all quickly. My Dad was making about $21K/yr, so $10 was a couple hours work.

My Mom said turned in her seat and said 'Your Dad won $500 on his first pull.'... They took the money and ran. They had 2 big buckets of quarters that they paid for things for most of the rest of the trip. Gas, groceries, hotel... all with quarters. I don't think they ever gambled again... but it always makes me smile to know that SOMEONE beat the house.

I attended many conventions in the past as both vendor and consumer.
I'd 'budget' for out of pocket entertainment that goes with that and do my best to adhere with the budget.
Vegas was easy if you carefully gamble as you needn't buy drinks.

Best yet was if you were part of the convention committee as they housed and fed you and gave U complimentary show tickets.

'Back then' I travelled so much that I even earned a 'free $ 2' trip to Hawaii on air miles.
Another time an 'anywhere Eastern goes' for the family. (we gave up our seats due to overbooking) and at that the trip was on some other freeby .

LOL, I'm not a 'gambler' as such but have had my fair share of luck.

Speaking of luck.
One anniversary dinner we are presented with tickets for the restaurant's draw for their 25 anniversary event.
Yep, you guessed right,
We won a week for 2 in Jamaica!

At a small convention I also won tickets to Paris for 2 but never used them as that Airline had a particularly bad reputation for losing engine parts and not paying suppliers.
Shucks at one time they needed passenger CCs to pay for their fuel for the return trip.

Sounds like that could be TACA of South America. 'Take A Chance Airline'.

We drove 2+ hours to SFO to pick up daughter, at like 2am. She wasn't on the incoming flight. We called her friends, they verified she went through departure TSA.

We found a flight attendant from the incoming TACA flight. She got on a computer and said our daughter didn't exist in the company's records. We drove 2 hours home, got home at dawn, very concerned. I'll never forget that is the only time I've ever driven while dangerously tired. At least there was no one else on the road at that hour.

Finally daughter called. Due to weather TACA hadn't made the Costa Rica refueling stop so they deposited their SFO passengers in Nicaragua instead and told them to take the following night's flight from there.

The FA we had talked to at SFO never told us the flight we went to meet, had never gotten as far as SFO. What she arrived on must have been a previous day's delayed flight.

We repeated the 4 hr overnight round trip to SFO on the next night, and picked up a tired and frustrated daughter. No more TACA for this family!

From a 33 year retired airline captain:

Do everything that you can, to convince your friends and family members to NOT buy tickets on 3rd world country airlines!
It is not necessarily a convenience issue, but it IS most definitely a SAFETY issue!
I speak from EXPERIENCE!

AND, they had brains enough to take the money and run with it. Smart people.

About 3 weeks ago we went out for lunch and I put $10 in the slots (pokies we call them), playing maximum lines at 5c a line, pulled a $580 jackpot, cashed in then dropped $50 in a $1 machine after lunch and got another $500, cashed in, took the coins and a couple of $5 notes I had and picked up another $200.
Went home and banked it, would be nice if you could do this every day.
I have watched the machines while having lunch and noted when they pay, rarely on a Monday or Tuesday, often between 1100 and 1200 Thursday and Friday, nothing after lunch until about 1430 when everyone is heading home.
All machines are hooked up to one central computer, this is all venues in the State, payouts over $200 are not in coins, an attendant has to give you a voucher which you cash in, over $2000 is only payable by cheque.
Whilst it is nice to gloat about taking home over $1k it doesn't happen often, not to me anyway.

Former Craps dealer, I have often wondered why a man would work all week for $800.00 And go to the craps table and win $1500.00 and not quit. He keeps playing and not only looses the $1500.00, but also the $200 he started with.
