Hello, I'm sorta new here, but been signed on for years.

I'm investigating a market niche in which I could get involved in leasing some side mower tractors to towns and municipalities around my region. I was looking for some input on where would be a good place to look for used ones to get started; auctions? private sales? I can't seem to find much relative, helpful info by doing a generic search, so maybe someone here who works for a county or state could point me towards a good source to purchase a couple of decent, used tractors with SIDE mowers, not over-the-rail style, just side mounted.

I prefer older, pre-emissions and pre electronic equipment myself. I can do the work on them, just don't care for anything with electronics or exhaust treatment. Old school is my deal.

Thanks in advance.

You might find some at State Surplus auctions. Most of the side mid mount mowers were mounted on industrial version Ford or now New Holland tractors. Most municipalities and some with states lease them though, so finding ones for sale can be hard. There is a outfit in Claremont, NH that leases out a large amount of them to municipalities and a lot of them are the Fords.

Might want to understand the contracting process on how they plan on doing so. each state, town, federal is different. I can tell you working with the Feds, everything we contract for equipment wise has to be brand new we dont mess with old stuff, and leases dont happen much either because the recap on them is usually ridiculous.

Good advice, thanks. I've noticed most all of the side mowers and over the rail ones are either Ford or New Holland myself. I have been to the Tiger factory in South Dakota picking up brand new tractors that went to various airports in the past.

Try municibid. I don’t think there are any on there now but they do pop up. Look for the mower as much as the tractor. I sold these a few years ago. If it were me, I’d look for (in order)

1. Tiger
2. Diamond
3. Alamo

Tiger is by far the most robust. Diamond was formed by a group that left Tiger. Their units are generally similar to older Tigers.

What makes Tiger great is their mounting systems. They have full subframes that run the entire length of the tractor. Others have partials or even bolt to the bell housing!!!! Look for cracked blocks and transmissions. You could also look for units on Deere 6M series. The 6M series utilizes a full frame on the tractor.
