Depends where you are and who you talk to. I have heard Houston pronounced Hewston but some in-laws in Georgia pronounce there county spelled Houston they call ot Howston. Go figure.

This discussion makes me think of an old episode of "I Love Lucy", where she was rehearsing a TV commercial. The product was vitameatavegemin...and it was 40 proof. It took her a bit too long to get it right.

That was pretty good. She’d make a cheap date. A few tablespoons of 40 proof and she’s hammered.

Remember the old TV show "All in the Family"? In parts of Texas (and parts of Oklahoma too) they pronounce "Oil" as "Awl". Hence the bumper sticker on a Texas car that said "Oil in the Family".

Hey bunyip. The town of Yosemite around here is pronounced Yo-Se-Mite. So yall still aint got it right. Course there is another area called Ge-Nee-Vee thats spelt Geneva. Thats just the way it tis😁

LOL! Having lived in the Yosemite, KY area, this is the story that I was told; in the 1800's, the area was thriving lumber town but had no name. The lumber barren's daughter vacationed in CA. Putting two and two together, that's where the name comes from. The pronunciation likely because the locals could not say Yo-Sem-Ety.

And Lancaster, KY is not pronounced LANG-kister, lol!

And what about Garrard county. The last r is silent. I like to hear the National Weather Service pronounce it. They say ga-rard.

We seem to have a lot of that in this state; Miami Oklahoma (pronounced My-am'-uh), and Durant (pronounced Du'-rant).
