Need / want a pickup truck

^^^ I'd rather toss all that stuff on a trailer. I get home, I disconnect, leave the stuff on the trailer and pull the car in the garage.

I can get a 10' board or piece of pipe inside the wagon, sometimes a few of them if they're smaller sizes, so I don't always need the trailer. For bags of concrete or similar heavy items, I like the lower height of the trailer. But there are times when I have a load that's between the the two options I have now.

Not to mention the ease of loading a used piece of equipment such as a mower etc.. I bought a used 6x10 trailer in great shape for $600 years ago and I think I use it more than a tractor..

I have a Diesel, and actually someone with a 1/2 ton can tow more than me legally. I am at that limit, where I would have to get a different license, keep a log book and all that. With my dump trailer, I can legally carry 500 pounds, because so much of the weight I am paying for, is taken up by the heavier truck. Makes little sense!

Not sure what you are saying here. Trailer option more than the pickup truck?

SUV would be a good option if need the people hauling and towing hauling and couldn't afford a pickup. I like my pickup to be able to throw plywood, bags of mulch, bags of concrete in the bed.

Moving from the city to the country I didn't want to lack for hauling capacity.

I’d take an suv and a trailer over a half ton pickup anytime. I’ve got a ton dump and a suburban plus a few trailers. Anything that a half ton pickup can haul the suburban plus a trailer can haul better. I’ve got way more dry space and if necessary way more and lower to the ground outside space. Plus I can keep all of my tools inside in the dry and a lot more protected from theft. I only have 4 seats in the suburban because I removed the back seat. If I didn’t occasionally need them I’d remove the middle 2 and make more room.

Always wondered why the El Camino/Ranchero concept didn't catch on better.

Didn't they make those for people who couldn't decide if they wanted a car or a truck? They still make them today just different looking, the Chevy Avalanche, the Honda Ridgeline, etc.

I remember once, my Dad took the passenger seat out of our VW Bug and put as big a landscape rock in it's place as we could lift. then took it a hundred miles to the city. Would have been a nasty thing to have in there, in a rollover!

So the question to those more knowledgeable FORD F 150 or Chevy Silverado both 1/2 ton and I don't need a super cab. On the FORD side looking at the 5.0 engine vice the 3.5 Eco boost. Two wheel drive and some creature comforts like bucket seats, towing package etc. Interested in others comments on either good or bad .

I have a 2012 F-150 XL 2wd extra cab 5.0 engine and 8 foot bed. I bought it brand new for $24,000 and it just went over 100,000 miles last week. It's a basic work truck with power windows and mirrors, but not much else. I replaced the alternator at about 80,000 miles and I just had to AC done last week. The mechanic said that the way it's designed, the compressor or something else, I forget, rubs where it's mounted and wore a hole through the side of it. New factory ford parts and labor cost me $1,400, along with a rubber pad to stop it from wearing there again. Mileage as been a solid 18mpg with 90 percent of my driving being in and around town. We took it to Wyoming once and it's great on the road and even in the Mountains of Colorado, but mileage didn't change too much on the highway. It's a long truck, so U turns are a challenge, and I park farther away then most so I have plenty of room. I like to take two spots so I don't have to back out. Heaviest loads that I've towed have been around 8 thousand pounds and it's definitely noticeable. I've also had a yard of rock in the bed multiple times and it hauls it fine, but I did upgrade my tires to a higher load rating which made a huge difference over the factory tires. I plan to keep it another 100,000 miles and then will decide what to do based on how well it's holding up. I'm a contractor, so having a reliable truck is very important to me, and once a truck hits 200,000 miles, I start to get nervous about how much longer I can trust it to get to the job every day.

If I have a $1500.00 repair, I think it's the end of the world. BUT, then think about people that make loan payments every month and it wouldn't take long to add up to one of those repairs.

I had a pine butt cut probably 3’ diameter maybe a little bigger cut about 3’ long that I decided to sell for a table. Well, someone actually bought it and showed up an a small SUV to get it. I loaded it with the tractor and it just barely fit. I have no idea how she got it out but she was back the next day to get some more pieces.
