Buying Advice Purchasing a tractor on a credit card?

   / Purchasing a tractor on a credit card? #81
We get about $500. per year in Cabela points then let the grandkids use it. Everything on the card if possible but pay it off the 1st day of the month. Have bought many high dollar items using the card but no luck on vehicles, tractors, boats or travel trailers.

I used to use the Cabela's Card for the points. But, they just haven't had the service like they used to (even before the Bass Pro merger / buy out) and the prices are higher than almost anywhere else. I switched to a 2% cash back that I can spend anywhere. Put Cash into an envelope or right into the account for the CC purchase before I make it to make sure it gets paid off in the next cycle.

In this day and age where so many cry rasism and discrimination, I am astounded that certain identifiable groups are subject to discounts.

Then why bother?

I am not trying to be snide at all here, I am trying to show that this is the fallacy that many people fall into.

You speak of making $1135 a year from using credit cards, but because I use cash, I get reduced rates on many, many purchases; fuel, logging supplies, building materials, chainsaws, etc.

One day I was with my wife looking at an old antique stove to go in our home that has a 1930 d馗or. The saleswoman was telling me she was having a hard time selling antique gas appliances, and thus told me, "I would sell everyone of these gas stoves for half off if I could." I happened to have $4500 in my pocket, so I pulled out the wad of cash and said, "I'll give you $700 for that stove right now."

She went for it because she had just had two stoves come back because the buyers homeowner's insurance would not cover an antique gas stove. I do not have the problem, and by paying cash, it was a "as is" sale.

That was just one purchase granted, but it happens a lot.

In another case I did not spring for the new $7000 boiler for my house, but instead bought a used one for $700; 90% savings, and they both make a house warm. The used purchase was a private person and so a credit card could not have been used.

With credit cards, the credit card company dictates to you what the deal is going to be, and on what types of purchases as well. With cash, I can ask what the deal will be. If I like it, I can then agree to it, or not. In the case of the stove it was 50% and not 3%, but on most purchases, the vendor will knock the price back because most people pay with credit cards, so they inflate the prices by 3% anyway. But lets say the stove dealer did not go for a 50% sale, I could have asked for a 35% sale, or 25% sale...the point is, I can negotiate the savings.

I have only listed (2) cash purchases totaling savings of $7000. That is (2) purchases, yet it would take 6 years of cash back rewards to equate to just those (2) purchases. This is why credit cards in every way are a bad deal.

I want you to get angry, but not at me. Get mad at the credit card companies that hoodwink us, our kids, and our country. It is NOT a conspiracy, it is just the way the crazy system works, but it need not be so. Then realize I am not doing anything special. EVERYONE can use cash and beat the crazy system that is designed to make you think you are getting a lot of money back. You are getting some I admit, but you can get a lot more by never handing it out!

This is the stove we bought saving $700 just by paying cash.

Assuming that you eat every day.......what sort of "discount for cash" do you get on your groceries,...... & gas, & drug store purchases?
I get 5% cash back for those purchases, to a yearly total of $400 ($8,000 spent).
I absolutely LOVE THAT "bad deal"!

5% on every $100 worth of groceries = $5

On $3 per gallon gas, you may get 5 cents off for cash.
I get 15 cents....at every gas station!

I have never been in a drug store that offered a discount for cash.

My other CC gives 2% cash back on anything I buy.
I charge EVERYTHING on those 2 cards that I possibly can!

$1200 cash back each year, per my post #14
I LOVE IT!

tell me about it. My place is valued at around $800,000. There痴 no way I wouldn稚 have home insurance, and my place is fully paid off. Home insurance is a cheap cost as far as I知 concerned.

Agreed!
Spoken buy a guy who had a total loss in 1987.
If I paid insurance premiums for the next 150 years, I would still be ahead of the game.

I do lots of side work for cash and I don’t see many business offering a cash discount and you can’t spend over 10k without the government getting all in your ***. Heck I tried to buy a used car and the person wanted a check because she didn’t like having cash around. On the other hand I get between 5-1.5% back and if I trade in my points for airline tickets I can have a nice vacation just for buying supplies for my business.

As for insusrance. We self insure some things, those that we can afford to do without. We built our house 1 year ago and earlier this year we had a hail storm come thru and do a lot of damage. The cost of repairs the insurance company is covering will pay for the ins premium for the next 15 years. There are times to take the risk to self insure and times to let someone else cover the risk. And credit rating is one factor in determining what we are billed. We have been paying cash or CC for most things lately and our credit score has fallen a little because we do not have a "variety" of debt. i.e. no mortgage or car payments. So, this time when we bought a car we financed it even though we didn't need to. Essentially, we're paying $2k for a better credit score.

I buy lots of generators every year using a 2% back credit card. I pay it off every month. My credit score stays in the 830 range, and has for many years. I always thought that the score would go down since i never carry a balance, my house and cars are all paid off, and i have no debt, but the score never really drops. I keep an account with true credit (trans union) and use credit lock and check accounts every month. I like the fact that i have a source of emergency funds available if i ever need it. I also believe in keeping a years emergency fund available in liquid assets as i truly dont trust the economy and the weird things that are happening (like bitcoin). Cash is king. I still remember all my friends buying into Gold when it was going to go thru the roof to $5000 and $10,000. I never fell for that. I will also NEVER fall for ether (thin air) money.

Something about cash though pulling out and waving a wad in somebodys face. But yes in general cash is worthless to me. Yeah riding around with a bunch of bills(by the way is a huge liability in many ways dont know why you would do that) and the off chance you find something you want in personal sale or even store might net you something from time to time. But in general most stores dont care how you pay anymore, you can also use debit and get cash price on many things as well.

Cash can get lost, stolen, destroyed, it can be faked and lastly you cant move 10k or over anyways without somebody knowing at least banking wise. Lastly while that money sits in my pocket its doing anything for me, while its in the bank its garnering interest albeit small, or other perks that banks offer by having cash in their vaults.

I for one will not miss cash the day its gone, which will happen someday just a matter of time.

I just looked over at my wallet. I have a dollar in it. That's pretty much the extent of cash I carry...
