Barn Bat

I don't know on the water. You would think they would travel half a mile for a drink. They go further than that for a bug. I don't know how they keep from getting DIZZY. They race around the house all night long. Maybe at midnight they reverse direction. Bugs must be attracted to the lights shining out the house windows.

Stand out on the porch at this time of night - it's like being strafed by a squadron of tiny jets.

The Batcon website suggests that a large water source should be within 1/4 mile of the bat house.

Bat Houses

Elsewhere on the website it also indicates that bats swoop for a drink so a relatively still lake, pond or slow stream with minimal obstruction too swooping is desirable.

We've determined that a group of bats is called a Colony.

What is a group of bats sometimes called that are in flight? (the first responder with the correct answer wins the accolades and admiration of the members following this thread!!)

You had a mistake, but I fixed it. ( I now know what it’s called but never would have guessed it.)

I had to look it up. I will bet that nobody can guess correctly. Somebody will have to know - nobody will ever guess.

Thanks. Thought afterword about adding not to look it up. I was surprised when I ran across it!

Hhmm, the stream a half mile away (maybe 1/3) is a small stream. I would hope they could land and drink, probably not a chance at swooping unless they like saltwater.
