I have always liked going after the big stuff. I believe I am still pretty young and strong but what I have a hard time moving the tractor does. I split all my stuff by hand not matter the size, so it doesn't matter how big as long as I can get it to my place.

I split medium sized rounds like these into chucks with the splitter in vertical position. Then switch to horizontal.

Oh to be pretty young . . . :drink:

Again why I like doing it in the vertical configuration the splits don't have anywhere to fall..

I've done it vertical, but I just can't stand working like that. I prefer to be more upright when I work. I had a splitter that would do Horizontal or Vertical, I ended up using it almost exclusively in the Horizontal configuration. I did like the work height (about waist high). I ended up selling it and getting my current splitter - horizontal only with a hydraulic lift, plus 4-way and 6-way wedges. Most of the time, I just use the lifter as a staging platform, but it's handy when I have logs which are too large to lift. I also like the fact that the anvil is on the end of the cylinder, with the wedge stationary: the split pieces get pushed out on to the exit table. If they need to be resplit, I slide them back. If they are small enough, I leave them on the exit table, and the next split pushes them off the table and into the back of my trailer (I do a fair amount of my splitting out in the woods).

I break down big blocks in the vertical mode too. If I do it off my carry-all there is a nice hard flat surface to work from so the block is easier to move/slide around and load plus the block lays on the splitter nicely so there is no wrestling with it while you try to run the lever. Much easier on the back.

Right, I use the tractor to move rounds I cannot lift. This Grapple tip to tip is 49 inches. I barely have it gripped and there are a few more inches above the tip so call this one 4-1/2 feet +/- diameter, what I call medium size. I think the base of the tree was about 6 feet. I have a tree that is leaning in one field that is about 8 to 10 feet diameter. I do not need the wood so I hope it stays standing for a while. I would call that size large.

I doubt I would be saying easy if I had the size blocks you have to deal with. I consider anything over 20" as getting big. I am lucky that I can shy away from the monsters like I have seen people dealing with on here.

Yep . . . the "big" ones this past year were 2x's of 20" . . . . . . I wish I was younger.

I used my tractor today and I dealt with wood, but not at the same time... I cheated on firewood this year, didn't have the time to get what was free (minus labor of course) so I picked up some mill ends, varies from 4x6 to 6x12 and came as 24" lengths so I cut them all in half... the place I got it from wants a mere $60 a pallet (roughly 4x4x4) so that is a cheap true cord that stacks dead easy :).

And on the log splitter and big rounds thing, my tiny splitter (some Montgomery Wards thing that I don't remember the real model off the top of my head but was made in the '80's but was a whole $75) is only usable in the horizontal mode but at 8" off the ground it's easy to get big rounds on it assuming you can get them on their edge... that guy there required running through on one side then turning it 180* to get it to split...
