Loud Popping and Puffs of Black Smoke

I was mowing a hill Saturday. I though I could hear an occasional pop from the engine/exhaust. I pulled my ear protection and listened but could hear it. Another 3 minutes and I heard a much louder pop (like the sound of a backfire). Now at idle it pops (loudly, like a gun shot) every second, consistently, and large puffs of black smoke are rolling from the exhaust.

I'm looking for direction as to what the issue might be, and how best to diagnose it.

Check your valve lash. Worst case is you have a failed exhaust valve. Remotely possible is a dribbling injector.

Does anyone have any idea of the proper lash measurement for Jinma 354 with a Y385 engine?

Apparently you don't have an owner's manual. Maybe print these out or you can purchase a manual from any of the dealers.
