TODAYS SEAT TIME

Spent about an hour mowing roads to deer feeders and blinds then about 30 minutes bucket time watering some young trees.

Today I moved the new Kubota generator out of the dump trailer and into the shed I have been building. Our power company in northern California, PG&E, has always been unreliable and expensive. After many outages last year, and promise of more and longer to come, I decided to retire my little Craftsman 3500w generator and go to the trouble and expense of setting up the 10kw Kubota in a generator shed.

The little B21 is the handiest gadget! The next chore is a 100ft trench to connect the gen shed with the existing power transfer switch in the shop.

My seat time was yesterday, interesting day.
Went and picked up 4 ton of coal for this winter.
It was the first time I had tried to pull 4 ton up my driveway with the pickup usually just 2 or 3 at a time.
load of coal 2019.jpg
It didn't go well made it about 2/3s of the way and spun out.
The driveway isn't in the best of shape this year, getting lots or marbles and loose rock as many of the fines have washed away.
Ended up inching the trailer back down part of the way and calling to have another driver come by and get the tractor in front of the pickup,
no pictures of that was a bit busy, then pulled it up with the tractor helping the truck. Unloaded the coal and back out to pickup
a mini excavator (NH 35b) and bring that to the farm for some ditch cleaning.

Were you using 4Low? That is a heavy trailer for a 1500.

Nice emergency power system you are putting together there. I need to do similar, our power gets a little iffy at times here.

Oh yea, low range and traction tires.
Of course the driveways also 16 degrees or over 28% slope.
The tractor we used is over 10,000#s and it chewed a bit with the truck working too.

Thanks SR! When I get everything working I will do a installation post. It is a lot of work but interesting.

PG&E has been doing "webinars" in which they say, to avoid fire hazard we will cut your power anywhere from 4 hours to 48 hours and maybe a week. So, you better have a plan. That is all they have to say. People who have medical devices at home, I don't know what that "plan" might be. But PG&E has totally corrupted the regulatory agency so can do pretty much what they want. I am fortunate, I can compensate for the corruption and incompetence.

I agree, nice gen. My sister is trying to get a Generac 22kw put in her house in Muir Beach, and she keeps getting $20k estimates.
She has had one before, paid 10k to get one installed in Princeton NJ. Mine was a thousand less across the river in PA.
I have the same gen now on my house here. So we know the pricing and I guess it's just a Gold Rush for electricians in California now.
They have so many requests for gens now they manage their business, and apparently make a ton of money, by gouging the heck out of folks
who don't know better. Electrical reality in California is not good.

Lou, my Ram with the hemi and the eco rear is rated for only 7800 pounds but it pulled my 7000 pound travel trailer super easily. Clearly that
truck/motor has a lot more capability if set up right, but I've got air bag suspension and maybe that impacts on the capacity choices.
Today I think the truck is rated in the 12-13k range if set up right. Personally if I was pulling more than five ton I'd get a bigger truck.
You were at five tons so just a traction issue. Sure does sound nice when winding out under load doesn't it? ;)
Thank goodness for tractors!

What has happened in CA to cause a sudden need for generators - the fires ?? Or something else ?
