There are laws meant to allow you to travel directly through anti states. I can cite a few, but you would do better to listen to somebody with a law degree... preferably who will stand behind their advice.

So what could happen if I decided to drive from Maine to Florida with a handgun? MA will put you in jail for one year without a doubt. NY, NJ etc would probably do the same IDK... As far as I know, I can't leave the state of Maine in a car carrying a handgun..

No, I believe you can transport an empty handgun as long as it is not with ammo. And locked up. Some good info here: Concealed Carry - Resources, Maps, Forums, Articles - USA Carry

To clarify that a bit, the weapon must be unloaded and trigger locked and not within easy reach and the ammunition must be in another place in the vehicle, also not within easy reach. I travel through Illinois regularly (which has the most draconian gun laws of any state) and that is how I do it and how they want it done. I usually carry a S&W 44 mag wheelgun and it has a 'Hillary Hole' so I just use my lock key and pocket it and call it good. Same applies when flying but the weapon must be sequestered in a TSA approved airline case with TSA approved locks and the ammunition must be separate and can be packed in a carry on bag or at least could be last time I flew anywhere. I've always held out hope that firearm laws concerning handguns would be standardized across all states but the way it is now, don't believe that will ever happen.

Watch what you wish for, it may just come true. If firearm laws ever do become standard nationwide it will more likely be stricter than the worst state, not better.
I only wish that the current transport laws were much more transparent and easy to understand.

Just told you the accepted guidelines for interstate transport whether it's a reciprocity state or not. When you idiot democrat governor gets done up there in Maine, you'll be like Illinois.

Been playing your Moose lottery for a few years now. Hope I get a draw tag before I'm too old. One of my very close friends is a Mainer so I'll hunt with him.

Are you a lawyer, willing to put your name on the line if somebody finds out that you aren't quite accurate?
Our fantastic new Governor is a big reason why I bought my AR while I could, and hope to get my CC permit this winter.

Me, just reciting from the book, nothing more. I suggest you call the NRA and get a copy of who and what has reciprocity and what you can and cannot do as far as interstate transportation of firearms. I think (but not sure) that the GOA also has them.

I get the Bangor News every morning and between that and my very dear friend (who happens to be retired LE), I get an earful quite a bit.

I will say that the current political gamesmanship is disgusting but I take solace in the fact I don't own one black gun and have never had the desire to own one, so while I watch the current political game with disgust, I'm not worried about any 'buyback' because I don't possess any in the first place.

Therein lies the issue however. As I said in an earlier post, it's the slippery slope and that slope leads right to total confiscation of ALL LEGAL firearms from the citizens. Note I said legal. Criminals will never comply because... They are criminals and criminals don't obey the law, they break the law.

I cannot understand why the current crop of dumb nut politicians don't get that but maybe I'm not right in the head. Who knows.

Good luck with out of state moose tag.. The only reason we have the governor we have is because most of the population is in southern Maine, it may as well be Mass as far I'm concerned, to bad when they decided to break the part of Maine off that was Mass they didn't come up a little higher with the line and take Potland to Mass with them..

I also read the same things... then I read about people who are in jail because they didn't have their i's dotted when in some of those states.
I do agree that the laws should be equal nationwide. In a perfect world that's the way it would be. Unfortunately we're stuck with the world that we've got.

Case in point; my brother lives out west, has had a CC permit for over 20 years and was some type of Sheriff's reserve out in AZ. Somebody raised a complaint against him for whatever reason and he spent a night in jail. Eventually the charges were dropped, according to my brother because the complaintant's parents wouldn't lie for him. He came back to Maine when my father got sick, carrying his 9mm. After a few months he drove back. It wasn't until he tried to renew his CC permit that he discovered that-although the charges had been dropped- he still wasn't supposed to possess firearms. It took a few months and even more lawyer fees to get that straightened out, and despite the fact that the charges were dropped- and the complaintant is recorded on the 911 tapes threatening to kill my brother- the best that he can get from the DA is a letter saying that "we choose not to press charges at this time." Although we are innocent until proven guilty, because he didn't get a chance to defend himself in a court of law, the justice system considers him a risk.
