My dad has a 5085M open station tractor he uses sporadically around the farm. Last week his headlights would not turn off unless he disconnected the battery. We have since figured out if the hood of the tractor is open, the lights will stay off. Once you close the hood, they come back on, regardless of the position of the switch. When the hood is up, the switch operates as normal. Does anyone know if the light switch acts as a ground circuit or a positive circuit? I cannot find any electrical wiring diagrams when searching Google.

I'd check with the Deere dealer and ask for a screen shot of the electrical schematics. They can pull that up for you, if they want to do it. It's a good test of a helpful dealer.

Is the hood pinching the wiring?
That's my gut feeling, but dad can't see where it's pinching at. If the hood was pinching a wire, my first gut feeling that it's completing a ground circuit somehow causing the lights to come on. If I can get a wiring diagram I can figure out how the lights are circuited without having to tear into the wiring loom blindly.
The switch definitely works by sending power to light relays, dimmer switch and lights. It does not complete circuit to ground. It is puzzling to hear the way it is working. Sounds like a wiring issue. Maybe a 12 volt wire is pinched against the light power wire when hood is closed. Or harness may be against hot post on alternator? At first I was thinking a sticking relay for lights staying on, but opening the hood should not affect that.
