Apple cider today

I always wanted to try using my wood splitter in vertical position to squeeze apple cider. It should make that apple pulp into quite a pancake. It would take e special made strong basket

It’s been a while since I’ve made any cider but we used an electric old lady version of a wood chipper to grind the apples. It was probably useless for chipping wood but it did a fine job on apples.

I put trees (variety of types) in last Fall so I figure it will be a few years before I get much in quantity. Would love them to be wormless, but I don't know how to ensure that.

Store bought Red Delicious are not much different than red covered corks. First time I tried one, I though it was one of those fake apple decorations. Maybe natural ones are better.

What'ya'll do with the left over mashed mess?

I have dad's press. It goes back to at least my great grandfather. ciderpress.jpeg

we harvested about 400 lbs of apples last year from our 3 trees. this year there is maybe 50 between them. a late frost. our pear tree on the other hand is full! they are much harder to catch at just the right time, and much harder to harvest though.

The mash went in the feed tubs for the cattle we have, was gone in about 2 minutes, just like the DDG only faster...lol

I picked about 1000 pounds of apples and not a worm though if there was, it would have become a cider worm...lol

Probably could have mashed the mash a bit more but I was shooting for 20 gallons and that was all the jugs I had anyway. Mash came out pretty dry. Told my wife I'd like to get a couple hundred pounds of grapes and make grape juice too.

I love this time of year. Fresh cider goes for 6-7 $/gallon here and I’ll have about 8 gallons in the freezer by the time they stop pressing. In the past couple of years I’ve planted over a dozen fruit trees, in a few years they should start producing and then I will need my own press.

I really don't care for cider that's been frozen, so we only have it fresh...

I have apple tree's and get all the apples I want, but my fav is a good apple pie!
