I do need to drive very carefully, so far I've been using the skid steer for its finer controls for both the forks and speed. (gear tractor)
I tend to be a little eccentric with my firewood and my process and find that a tall single row has the best/fastest drying results.

I agree with the tall single row for drying.. I wouldn't even try to move them full though!

I started with free pallets and am graduating to ibc totes.

I picked up some of these crates that fancy patio stone came in, some sort of imported limestone. But I also have 4 IBC totes. I can fit almost twice as much in an IBC tote than a crate, but my loader can barely pick up a fully loaded one, wet they can run 1600lbs+. If they are too heavy I have to use the 3pt on the back of the Tractor, but have a lot less maneuverability that way vs. the front forks on the loader.

I've got a couple of those totes too.. seems like a pain to get wood into and then out of them.. how do you set them up for access?

I cut a small "U" not on one side to reach down low. After seeing some others I think I need to make mine larger. This winter will be the first for pulling wood out of them so we will find out. A guy sells just the IBC "cages" on craigslist for $30 each and about 45 minutes each way. Have not had any luck coming across any cheaper or free yet.

Just a note: The boxes I build are filled with two "single rows", they aren't just stuffed full... That allows the air to travel through the middle of the box too.

I used a sawzall & cut mine like this, seem to be plenty strong enough still, however I don't ever plan to stack them. I think they are rated (uncut of course) to stack full of liquid. I cut the "U" only on one of the wider sides, they have been very easy to load. I use some small rope or small bungee cords for the tarp on the top. I will start stacking a small pyramid on the top from now on so the water drains off better. I also have to cut the plastic liners to make individual rain covers.

Hunt4570,

This is my method for utilizing totes:
IBC 2.jpg

I cut the bottom out just above the concave area where the drain valve is so I have straight sides: The picture is of my first attempt and I used 2x4's attached to the plastic and they rested on the top rail of the cage on three side to hold up the bin. Since then, I have started using zip ties to hold the bin on the cage.

The picture shows the access cut out of the cage, and the one side of the plastic bin. I cut on the long side so it is not much of a reach to get to the back and stack two rows deep.

I like being able to use the bin for a number of reasons. First, it adds capacity, just under 1/2 cord. Second, it provides a rain/snow cap. And lastly, I have less plastic to dispose of.

My LS has 2700 lift at the pins, plus I have loaded tires and 1000 lbs of ballast with most of the ballast at the rear of the carry all (see below). I use lead for my ballast as it is densest material I have on hand. The milk crates are screwed into the 2x sides to hold the lead ingots from shaking out and serve to carry stuff.

Smaller tractors would not be able to lift these.

I cut man size doors in one end, left top and bottom cross pipes, works real well loading and unloading.

So this is how I have mine cut, wanted to leave the top "rail" intact so as to not let the top splay out. Mine are mainly relegated to holding cooking wood at this time.

And why do you have to wait two more weeks??

For the past 25+ years I picked mid October to be my time to get wood cut up and under cover, sort of like a traditional thingy by now and I cant go against tradition. It's based on how I hate cutting up firewood in a T-shirt, usually by October we finally get rid of that SC weather so I can start wearing flannel shirts again, them shirts make me look like an ole fashion Mainer aha, I think October is the best month of the whole year in New England..........
