Was this the hard starting tractor. I'm guessing someone used ether.

Yes the one he could only start by pulling it.
Does it matter at this point what broke them?
It now needs a full rebuild regardless.

One suggest is to have the head checked at a machine shop. It seems pointless to do the block and not have the head checked out and made right if any issues.

I would agree. Other than you do need to figure it out. But if someone loaded it up with ether and blew it up that's your reason there busted. If you have stuck valves or something broken in the head you need to figure that out as well. I agree, if I went this far I would have the head checked to make sure that my rebuild works.

Do you really need to figure it out?

He is planning on replacing pistons from what he said. Surely the entire bottom end will be done.
Taking heads to a machine shop and having them done means the top end is done.
Head gasket will be done. So basically whatever the cause should be corrected.

His fuel system should be good as it ran good when he pull started it. No power but with rings gone that is explained.

I understand the desire to know, but when you redo all that might be damaged it really does not matter what caused it, just put it back right and have thousands and thousands of hours to look forward to!

Yep if we have the head gone over it doesn't matter. We're saying the same thing here!
