So far, I'd say this 10 speed transmission rocks. It tows our little trailer through the hills here and with shifts that are nearly imperceptible. We do have some grades in this country and the other day, I was going down one of our very steep streets and seems that the transmission had downshifted, and kept the vehicles speed in check.

Just admiration of this 10 speed to date.

FE is fuel economy. I think all the Ford 10 speeds operate the same way. They have a manual position as well as PRND on the shifter. If it's in manual, the +/- changes the gears. If it's not in manual, the +/- toggles the gear position display on and off. There is also another button that toggles between normal, sport and towing mode, which changes the shift point program.

Ok got it.
When you shift to "S" (sport gear) the "+" and "-" allow you to shift gears manually but will not allow you to shift too high if you RPMs are low.
When in "S" a digital tach appears to the left of the speedometer with the gear you are in in red on the tach.

When you are in "D" drive and touch the " + or -" on the gear shift the 1-10 appear on the right hand side of the speedometer showing which gear you are in. pushing the + - toggle will not change gears when in "D"

You can lock out the upper gears in "D", in any drive mode. Just click "-" with the gears displayed, 10th will drop off the display. Click again, 9th drops off, and so on. Click "+" to bring them back. With all gears displayed, click "+" again to remove the gear display, "+" again to bring it back.

Example: I typically lock out 9 & 10 when travel speed is 50- 60 mph, and find my FE is actually better, as there is less engine "lugging" and boost demand (all the Ford EB engines manage boost through torque demand tables). When speeds increase, I click "+", and upshift into 9th, and again to 10th if speeds continue to climb. Not sure where the sweet spot is on the 4cyl Ranger, but some experimentation should find it. My 2.7 F150 likes to cruise around 1800 rpm. If you don't lock out upper gears, it will upshift to cruise around 1400-1500, which will trigger boost if any slight throttle input is given.

Is this only on the Lariat?

Daola, just got back from a test drive locking out the upper gears, in fact I was able to lock out the top nine. Thanks for the explanation, now I go it right.

Tinted all windows and also added a sun visors tint layer to the front windshield along with tinting it.

So what is the consensus on MPG of the Ranger 2.3L vs the F150 2.7L ?

Awesome! Love that color, btw..

Seems to be pretty close based on what I've been able to do ('18 supercrew 2.7 4x4 3.55 gear), vs. what I've read with the Ranger. I've been averaging ~24 this summer in mixed driving, very little city, mostly rural two-lane. With the BX in tow (~5K), I get 16-18.

Given the size & power advantage, it's pretty amazing, IMO.

Its high fuel mileage and all the extra power that's available is amazing. It has better fuel mileage than our Hondo element gets. And on top of that, has more get-up-and-go. More like a sport car than a truck.

The review Autotrader - page unavailable have "The Ranger's turbocharged engine outperforms the Tacoma's V6," and I totally agree.
The more I drive it the better I like it.

I have only use a half tank, the on-board fuel monitor says I'm averaging 22.5 in city driving. That includes a lot of idle time figuring everything out.

I saw a grey Ranger today. Looked very sharp!

That said if the MPG is about the same as. 2.7L F150, I would opt to the F150 for size reasons. That is just my :2cents:

Having said THAT, I repeat, the Ranger sure looked SHARP.

How is that for sitting on the fence?
