Secure Those Loads! -- Teen killed when hay bale falls from truck: Charges pending

I seen a bale come off a truck just about a month ago, landed in the middle of the road , vehicle behind him luckily had time and seen it to move over.

I hit a small square bale of hay many years ago with my pickup. It is a good thing I had a steel bumper. It had come off a truck coming at me at a combined speed of 120 mph. The bale exploded when I hit it and for the next week I was power washing hay out of my rad. I was lucky.

In my state agricultural products transported by farmers are exempt from load securement. Was this a 2,000 lb roll or a 50 lb bale? Everybody lost, but I can't imagine adding more burdens to farmers.

Yup.

Way better to burden the rest of us with dead loved ones.

Those poor, poor farmers.

Waiting for the rest of the story, but your post is inexcusable. I'll pray for your soul, right after I pray for that family.

Hope you never lose a son. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

We all loose someone all the time. It's the way this thing (life here) works. Why always Pray after the fact, to someone of apparently such power that he/they can fix things, but never use that power to prevent the incident in the first place. Makes not a lick of sence to me. Kind of tired of hearing this non sense over an over again on this site.

Here in Minnesota, a major agricultural state, a farmer is responsible for their load and liable if something falls off and causes an accident. True we do not need to secure a load hauled at 25 mph by a tractor like we need to secure a load hauled but a truck, but that does not free us from responsibility of something falling off causing an accident. I do carry a high liability coverage but hope I never need to use it.

I've hauled and delivered hundreds of loads of round bales on my goose neck and I double stack them and every stack is strapped. No exceptions. Small squares on a hay rack, never. You interlock the bales and they never move.

The comment about farmers was just plain ignorant and I should have reported it. Probably posted by someone who 'thinks' their orange juice comes from the diary case at the supermarket.

And this is the nonsense we've come to expect from you.

I hope you never have to experience what it's like to lose a son.

I have.

I wouldn't even wish it on the likes of you.

And there's something seriously wrong with you.

That might have been my post, but I was being sarcastic to try and get the point across on how important our food source is and how lawmakers can go overboard with unneeded regulations. I wish people that criticize farming would put in a day working at a farm and see what it's all about and how easy it is. I would believe that someone inside a motor vehicle can be hurt by a square hay bale when I see the report. The other person that posted hit one and even his radiator survived. It didn't seem close to a fatal crash even know he said combined speed was 120 mph. I have seen cars hit square bales which fall apart into clumps of grass/straw and the car keeps on going. There is undoubtedly more to this story.

Sorry about your loss Slowpoke Slim. Nobody here wants to diminish anyone's loss or injuries. Just looking at the big picture and how everyone needs food that they can afford and every new law comes at a cost.

Could have been a round bail that rolled off the trailer. Could have been a square bail too. I can see where a 50 or 60 lb square bail would blast through a windshield easily when hitting it at a combined force of 100 - 120 mph. Especially if it hit the windshield, end first, straight off the trailer. Another possibility is the bale hit the car and he veered off the road and hit something else or rolled over. As the SHP says around here regarding deer on the road... "Hit them. Do not try to avoid them." Deer accidents are far less likely to result in injuries if you just drive into the deer rather than trying to avoid them. Avoiding them likely results in your car off the road and either rolling it or hitting a tree. Most deer accident deaths are caused by someone trying to avoid the deer. Kill the deer, save a life.
