GM trucks have slipped

You aren't looking hard enough. The average age of a car on the road in the U.S. is 11.8 years old. That means half of them are older than that. Let me say that again...

1/2 of all cars on the road today in the U.S. are older than 11.8 years.

That's noticeable to me when I travel to the Southwest. I get a kick out of spotting hundreds of cars still on the road that I haven't seen in decades up north. It's like time travel. :)

Ya I read it the first time.. I go by what I see here on the east coast, 11.8 years old isn't that far off of 10.. I don't travel much to places such as rural Kentucky or inner city's so I don't see to many junkers anymore..

Well, I have not done an empirical study of the matter, and do not have access to vehicle registration data, but I do cover about 140,000 miles a year commercially on the road and I would be hard pressed to believe that half the cars/trucks on the road are older than 10 years. And I do cover both the more remote rural areas as well as inner cities like Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Twin Cities, Milwaukee, etc.

The average age of a car on the road in Maine is 11.2 years. That means half of the cars you see in Maine are older that 11.2 years. So if you see 1000 cars in a day, 500 of them were over 11.2 years old. You said you don't hardly see any cars over 10 years old, yet half of them that you see are well over 10 years old. You just don't notice it, probably for a few reasons.... 1. they all look the same due to safety constructions and aerodynamics. 2. they rust much less due to better corrosion inhibitors. 3. where they do rust is usually covered with plastic, like bumpers, rear quarters, rocker panels, etc...

Ohio is 11.6
Minnesota 11.8
Wisconsin is 11.5

I agree with Moss in regards to visually identifying a 10yr old vehicle. That's an 09 or older. The more popular models driven today would be very hard for me to date. I might get within 5yrs with a lucky guess. My wife's Grand Cherokee is 9yrs old. I'd never consider it old. But next year it will be. :)
